Ole Monterey Golf Club in Roanoke offers an approachable 18-hole parkland layout set against gentle Virginia hills. Known for its friendly environment and affordable rates, the course welcomes golfers seeking a relaxed round with scenic views and walkable terrain.

Course Overview

Located in Roanoke, Virginia, Ole Monterey Golf Club offers an 18-hole layout that appeals primarily to local golfers seeking an affordable and accessible option. The course presents a traditional parkland style unfolding across gently rolling terrain, with fairways lined by mature trees and occasional glimpses of the surrounding mountain ridges. From the tees, golfers encounter a modest test that blends straightaway challenges with a few doglegs, inviting strategic shot placement without overwhelming less experienced players.

The course yardage and par are typical of many regional tracks, providing a round that neither punishes nor underwhelms. Ole Monterey's conditioning has seen fluctuations, but ongoing efforts aim to improve the playing surfaces, especially on the greens, which have been noted to vary in quality over time. Players who prioritize pace of play and a casual atmosphere will find the course welcoming, although it may lack some refinements found at higher-tier championship venues.

Walkers are common on the course, encouraged by the well-manicured paths and relatively open routing. Golf carts are available but are not mandatory, allowing players to engage with the course’s natural rhythm. The layout is straightforward, with holes that offer fair opportunities to recover when errors occur, making it approachable for a broad spectrum of skill levels.

Positioned next to Blue Hills Golf Course, Ole Monterey benefits from the local golf community’s friendly presence and scenic backdrop, including views of the Wells Fargo tower and distant mountain outlines. Wildlife sightings, such as deer near the 16th hole, add a quiet companionship to an otherwise unfussy round.

With rates that remain competitive, Ole Monterey serves as a practical choice for players seeking an economical venue to practice and enjoy golf without the premium costs of larger resorts or private clubs. Its blend of natural scenery, accessible challenge, and casual hospitality creates a pace and setting for laid-back rounds of golf in the Roanoke area.

Course Highlights

Ole Monterey’s layout is defined by its straightforward, tree-lined fairways and approachable greens that reward steady ball-striking. The course’s proximity to the Blue Hills Golf Course creates a pocket of accessible golf in Roanoke’s landscape. Wildlife appears regularly, in particular deer near key holes, enriching the playing experience with quiet natural moments. While not a championship-level test, the course challenges players to manage accuracy over length and offers enjoyable views of the region’s evolving skyline and surrounding mountains.

Like horrible nightmare, thought I went back to work. Called the day before and was told golf course was in pretty good shape. A wasted 37 dollars. They tell you everything a mower is on the way but never shows. If they would lower the price to about 15 dollars, you could practice and get pretty good hitting from rough. I don't think the people working there are very friendly are know what good shape is. We saw 3 other groups playing or trying to play or looking for balls in the fairway.

Great course. If you’re going to miss, miss left off of the tees! Almost got hit twice by golfers on adjacent holes. One guy actually managed to hit the top of our golf cart from 180 yards away which scared me pretty good, but thankfully we weren’t injured. I have played this course probably 15 times. It’s a lot of fun. I always see deer on hole 16. Great place to play and very affordable. Beautiful views of the Wells Fargo tower and the mountains. It’s next to Blue Hills golf course also. On hole 13 I think you could walk through the woods and be at the green of home number 4 in blue hills.

By far the worst course I've ever played in my life and it was $50!? WILD. It was a fun challenge playing some shots out of the rough but the everything here just sucks. Staff was great though

This place was supposed to be better since we got a new mower but it is still trash. Don't even bother wasting your time coming here unless you just like to play on crappy greens.

By far the worst course in the Roanoke valley. Doesn’t mow the grass anywhere. Way over priced. All around the worst in the Roanoke valley

Awful experience. Rates went up but shape of course went down. Only one green on the entire course that was in good shape. Hit several balls down the middle only to find the grass 6-8 " high. Weeds around tee boxes. Definitely a locals course. Pay a little extra and go to Blue Hills. Auburn Hills in Riner is Excellent and the same price! Very disappointed
