Duck Woods Country Club

Southern Shores, North Carolina, USAOuter Banks

Duck Woods Country Club presents a strategic 18-hole championship layout along the Outer Banks, featuring abundant water hazards and coastal woodlands that reward precision and thoughtful course management. This private club balances a competitive challenge with a quiet natural setting for members and sponsored guests.

Course Overview

Set along the North Carolina Outer Banks, Duck Woods Country Club offers an 18-hole championship course that tests precision and strategy amid serene coastal surroundings. This members-only club features a classic layout that weaves through natural wetlands and wooded edges, presenting a blend of water hazards and thoughtfully placed bunkers that challenge every shot. The design demands attention to course management, encouraging players to balance risk and reward as they navigate fairways framed by indigenous vegetation and the occasional turtle sunning itself near the rough.

Duck Woods is best suited for golfers who appreciate a competitive round with a variety of shot-making opportunities. While long hitters face penalties for overly aggressive play, the course remains approachable for mid to low handicappers who value accuracy over distance. The condition of the turf and greens can vary seasonally, but when well-maintained, the bentgrass surfaces offer a true roll that rewards thoughtful putting.

A noticeable feature of the course is its abundance of water hazards, integrated not merely as obstacles but as natural elements that enhance the landscape’s character. These features invite quiet moments between shots to absorb birdcalls and the gentle coastal breeze. The layout embraces walking, encouraging players to set their tempo and stay connected to the topography throughout the round.

Beyond the course itself, Duck Woods Country Club extends an atmosphere of camaraderie with a well-appointed clubhouse providing amenities tailored to members’ needs. The facilities include practice areas designed to sharpen skills before stepping onto the front tee. While the club maintains a strict members-only policy, guest play is available through member sponsorship.

For those planning a visit, footwear with good traction is advisable given the sometimes soft terrain near water features and natural wetlands. Early morning rounds can offer peaceful conditions before coastal winds pick up in the afternoon. Duck Woods delivers an experience that blends coastal charm with demanding golf, making it a memorable stop for dedicated players seeking a distinctive Outer Banks challenge.

Course Highlights

The course’s extensive water hazards serve as both strategic challenges and defining scenic elements. Natural coastal vegetation borders fairways, while bunkers are positioned to protect greens with subtle complexity. The layout rewards disciplined shot-making and offers varied conditions that reflect the Outer Banks environment.

Golf Staff were very friendly and course has a beautiful design. The course was not in the best shape however and needs a new greenskeeper. The man who served us at the restaurant was not very friendly.

Today, we gather to remember and honor the incredible life of our dear friend, Captain Ken. The news of his sudden passing has left us in profound grief, and our hearts ache as we struggle to comprehend a world without his vibrant presence. Ken was a man who embodied the spirit of life, love, and friendship. Hailing from New York, Ken lived a life full of color and joy, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met. His infectious smile and warm demeanor made him a friend to all. Whether you knew him for a moment or a lifetime, you were instantly drawn to his friendly nature and generous heart. Ken was more than just a man of great character; he was a man of many passions. A proud member of Duck Woods Country Club, Ken’s love for golf was legendary. He wasn’t just a player; he was a connoisseur of the game. The green was his sanctuary, a place where he found peace and shared countless laughs with friends. His passion for golf was matched only by his impeccable fashion sense. Ken had a style that was all his own—a trendsetter whose flair could be felt from New York to the farthest corners of the globe. Jewelry was another of Ken’s great loves. He had an eye for the finest pieces, each item a testament to his refined taste and appreciation for beauty. And, of course, who could forget his beloved Bentley? It wasn’t just a car to Ken; it was a symbol of his love for the finer things in life, a reflection of his distinguished taste and class. But beyond his passions and possessions, it was Ken’s heart of gold that truly defined him. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, to listen, to laugh, and to love. His kindness knew no bounds, and his generosity touched the lives of so many. Ken was the kind of person who made the world a better place just by being in it. We were blessed to have known him, and we are better people because of the time we shared with him. His sudden departure from this world while in Cyprus has left a void that can never be filled, but we take solace in the countless memories he left behind. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the extraordinary life he lived. Captain Ken was a friend, a brother, and a true gentleman. His legacy of love, friendship, and style will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, dear Ken. You will be missed more than words can express, but you will live on in our hearts forever.

Just played yesterday 6/1/23 for the first time. Heard great things from friends past years. Golf course was a dog track and worst course in the area. Course condition was not great at all for being private. Lot of bare spots all over fairways and rough. Greens were ok but mostly hitting of dirt and grass patches everywhere else. Save your money and go ANYWHERE else.

A fun course to play with lots of challenging water hazards - couldn't ask for a better spot to go out and play a round. Beautiful course with lots of wildlife, filling your round with lovely bird sounds, but watch for stray turtles crossing the fairway! Friendly staff in the Pro Shop at check-in.
