Nags Head Golf Links

Nags Head, North Carolina, USAOuter Banks

Nags Head Golf Links offers an 18-hole coastal challenge along the Pamlico Sound, where narrow fairways and fast greens demand precision and strategy. Boasting striking waterfront views and a thoughtfully maintained layout, this public course balances natural beauty with a compelling test for golfers of all levels.

Course Overview

Nags Head Golf Links presents a compelling blend of coastal golf that appeals to players seeking a challenge shaped by natural beauty and thoughtful design. This 18-hole, public course is set along the Pamlico Sound in Nags Head, North Carolina, where the proximity to water creates an ever-changing ambiance influenced by shifting winds and stunning vistas. The course’s layout demands strategic play rather than raw power, inviting golfers to navigate narrow fairways that weave through salt marshes, native grasses, and water hazards that seem to flow organically with the tides. Each hole offers distinct personality, with the back nine especially rewarding players who can manage angles and approach shots carefully to tame the tricky greens.

Playability is balanced for a broad spectrum of golfers. While casual players will appreciate the course’s moderate length and walkability, experienced golfers will find enough strategic depth to make every stroke count. The fast, well-maintained greens require precision, while the well-kept fairways demand accuracy off the tee, discouraging aggressive power shots that fall prey to the marshy trouble. The winds from the nearby sound contribute an extra dimension of difficulty, testing timing and shot selection without overwhelming the overall experience.

Amenities reflect the course’s focus on enjoyment and service. A friendly, professional staff ensures smooth pace of play and helpful guidance throughout your round. Frequent beverage carts enhance comfort on warm days, while the clubhouse offers a welcoming spot for post-round conversations. Visitors note that the course is in excellent condition year-round, with efficient maintenance preserving both its playability and natural character. For those planning to walk, the course is approachable with firm footing on well-groomed paths—sturdy golf shoes recommended to manage occasional dampness near water areas.

Nags Head Golf Links is a distinctive destination for golfers who appreciate a course where nature’s drafting skills and measured strategy combine. The scenic backdrop, deliberate layout, and emphasis on shot-making make it a compelling choice on the Outer Banks, capturing the spirit of coastal golf without compromising playability or enjoyment.

Course Highlights

The course’s signature appeal lies in its integration with the coastal environment of the Pamlico Sound. Expect narrow fairways bordered by marshland and water, strategic use of angles to navigate natural hazards, and greens that reward careful reads. The back nine offers particularly memorable holes with evolving views over the sound, demanding thoughtful approach shots under varied wind conditions.

Cool course views and gimmicky layout. Just a pretty miserable experience though from staff. 8am tee time and we don’t tee off until 8:25. We have a group of 3 & 2. Starter hinted at us playing as a 5some cause it would be a slow day of 4somes ahead. So we joined as a 5some on hole 2 and waited on 3 & 4. While waiting on the 5th tee box ranger approached and said “we can’t have a 5some on the course holding up a 2some”… in which I reply “well you have a 4some holding up a 5some” Several holes later they stop us again and threaten to kick us off the course even though we played 9 holes in almost 3 hours waiting. He suggested we split up or we will be kicked off. In which we replied “so we are going to make it slower for the people behind us playing as 2&3 that’s what your asking” Ranger replied “if slower is what it takes to not play as a 5 then so be it”. Just ludicrous management etiquette. $160 for aerated greens and 5.5hour round and rangers micromanaging the wrong group.

Beautiful course! We played 18 and took our time enjoying each hole. Sun was out, no crowds or waiting, greens freshly cut, and a fun challenge. We were excited to golf along the ocean, which the pictures and timing of the sunset turned out amazing! The cost per person wasn't overpriced, and staff all friendly and helpful.

Quality golf course. Cool design, weaves around the Pamlico Sound and the Nags Head Village. Always in great shape maintenance wise. A bit pricey but to expected on an island. When playing this course, keep in mind that it is a position golf course. Play the angles, hit the greens, and stay out of trouble. The fairways are narrow and offer little forgiveness! Bombing and gouging will not work on this course unless you want to lose a dozen balls. Play smart golf, as the course is not overly long, and you will thoroughly enjoy the challenge.

This course sounds like a golfer's paradise. Ocean views always make a round more enjoyable. Friendly staff can really elevate the experience. A beverage cart coming around frequently is definitely a plus. Sounds like a perfect day out.
