Makaha Valley Country Club delivers an inviting, value-driven golf experience on Oahu’s leeward coast. This 18-hole public course blends accessible play with tropical scenery, making it a strong choice for golfers seeking a laid-back round framed by island vistas.

Course Overview

Makaha Valley Country Club, located on Oahu’s leeward coast, offers an accessible and scenic 18-hole layout well suited to golfers seeking a relaxed yet engaging round. This public course stands out as a welcoming venue with affordable rates that invite players of varying skill levels to experience Hawaii’s natural beauty without the trappings of a resort destination. The course meanders gently through a valley setting, framed by lush tropical vegetation and distant mountain views that shift with the Pacific breeze. While not a championship-level challenge, Makaha Valley’s layout rewards thoughtful shot selection over raw power, with fairways that encourage strategic play and greens that demand steady putting strokes.

The terrain is forgiving in parts but features enough variation in elevation and hazards to keep rounds interesting. Bunkers and water hazards punctuate key holes, requiring golfers to balance risk and reward. The course architecture leans toward an approachable style, making it ideal for high handicappers and casual players, yet with subtle tests that experienced golfers can appreciate. Walking is possible here, and the path system follows the terrain smoothly, though golf carts are standard on site.

Makaha Valley’s clubhouse serves as a central hub, providing a pro shop and casual dining options where players can refuel with local flavors. Staff are frequently praised for their hospitality, enhancing the overall experience with their friendly and helpful approach. The course’s price and atmosphere foster an informal, community-driven vibe distinct from luxury resorts nearby.

Visitors should prepare for tropical weather conditions, with sun protection advised along with comfortable shoes for movement across varied ground. The course plays best in the morning when winds are lighter and temperatures still mild. Despite some maintenance challenges noted by players regarding greens and bunkers, Makaha Valley Country Club remains a valuable entry point to Hawaiian golf, offering enjoyable rounds amidst a setting that reflects the island’s quieter side. This venue is a destination for those who value relaxed play paired with island vistas and genuine local charm.

Course Highlights

Makaha Valley Country Club offers a relaxed 18-hole layout with tropical valley views and a course design that balances accessible play with strategic elements. Memorandum This is a golf course I always go to when I go to Hawaii. It's about an hour from Waikiki, past Honolulu. The mountains are like Jurassic Park, and you can see the vast Pacific Ocean in the distance, so you can enjoy the local Hawaiian time. It's relatively cheap and you can enjoy it comfortably. The peacock used to be the trademark.

My dad and I go weekly. Great food after a good game. You have to try there buger and garlic truffle fry's, so yummy.

A Hole-in-One Experience! Started my day with a mouthwatering breakfast that hit the spot before tee time. After tackling half the course, I couldn’t resist stopping in for lunch—and wow, the food was just as incredible the second time around! The staff were all warm, welcoming, and made me feel right at home. And let’s talk about those views—absolutely breathtaking from the green. Between the scenery, the service, and the bites, this country club delivers the full package. Can’t wait to come back!

If you're looking for a PGA course, this isn't that. However, it is an excellent practice course. I've read many comments complaining about the cart path blah blah blah... For $40 on weekdays and $50 on weekends, I personally feel it's a steal. It's quite challenging for a high handicapper like myself. My only wish is that the sand traps be actual sand traps rather than overgrown weed pools. 🤣 The staff is very friendly and that price includes a cart and some very nice photos if that's your thing. As my golf mentor used to say, a day on the golf course beats any day at work!

Beautiful setting but the course was rough. The greens are very slow and grainy with spotty patches. All the original sand traps have been allowed to revert to weed bunkers. Fairway grasses are long. Price was right but not a good value.

It doesn't look like the greens are managed very well, but I still went because it's one of the best golf courses in Hawaii and it's cheap. While teeing off in the middle, there's a homeless person resting under the shade of a tree.
