Piñon Hills Golf Course

Farmington, New Mexico, USANorthwest New Mexico

Piñon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, NM, offers an engaging 18-hole public layout set on high-desert terrain. With firm greens and strategic wind challenges, this course invites players of varied skill levels to test precision amid scenic mesas and towering piñon pines.

Course Overview

Piñon Hills Golf Course offers a distinct 18-hole challenge set against the dramatic high-desert landscape of Farmington, New Mexico. This public course weaves through terrain shaped by piñon pines, native grasses, and rolling mesas that create an environment both visually appealing and testful of strategic decision-making. Its layout demands an understanding of the elements, especially the often-present wind that influences shot selection from tee to green.

Measuring approximately 6,800 yards with a par of 72, Piñon Hills provides a rewarding experience for golfers who appreciate a balance between fair play and technical challenge. The fairways are generally generous, yet the course’s signature greens require precision with their subtle undulations and firmness, often influenced by the arid climate. Players can expect fast and true putting surfaces that elevate the importance of distance control.

The course’s design takes full advantage of Farmington's natural topography without oversculpting the land, leading to several holes where the native landscape acts as both a scenic backdrop and a strategic element. Golfers will encounter bunkers that actively guard greens and smaller tee boxes that encourage thoughtful club selection.

Beyond the golf itself, Piñon Hills extends a warm welcome through its well-kept clubhouse facilities and the Grill On The Hill restaurant, where post-round meals featuring local flavors enhance the overall visit. Though walking is possible, the course’s wide expanses and elevation changes make using a cart a common choice for many players, particularly under warm summer skies.

This course appeals to a broad spectrum of golfers – from mid-handicappers seeking to sharpen their approach shots to lower handicaps aiming to navigate its strategic puzzles. The staff’s friendly, professional approach complements a golf course that rewards thoughtful play and persistence, establishing Piñon Hills as a Southwest destination well worth exploring.

Course Highlights

Piñon Hills integrates its natural desert environment with strategic course design, featuring firm, fast greens and bunkers strategically placed to challenge approach shots. Wind is a consistent factor on many holes, requiring adaptable play. The course’s signature offering includes elevated tees and greens that reward precision and control. They scheduled us for a no tour tourney weekend and then set a make up Tourney for our trip and did not let us out until 2:30 pm with a 1:20 tee time. Unbelievably bad service and this is all tied to the home 2 suites in town

Quality of the golf course was very nice. Went in the heat of August & was well maintained, no burnt out greens or fairways. Stimp.eter greens were about a 10.5. over all a nice challenge to play too, quite windy on the day I went. Facilities well maintained, pace of play was very good. No refreshment cart when i was there & you have to pay extra for range (& is a little distance to reach it). The price is worth it and the staff were very friendly.

Can't say much other than, this course is so pretty and challenging, especially the greens!! Pace of play is not an issue other than on weekends around the 11am to 2pm start times, it can be a bit slow. Now they implemented the Golf Course Ranger(s) which should help with the pace of play. I would recommend lunch at the Grill On The Hill, and partaking on their Pinon Hills Green Chili Cheeseburger w fries. Luke Tanner is our PGA Club Professional and is quite the gentleman, he's availabile for any questions you may have about our course, along with Chris Jones our GC manager.

The golf course was great, however the customer service and how organized they were was absolutely terrible. We had a time time that was close to a tournament finish and we didn’t get on the course until 2 hours later. They need to have a lot more organization

This course is awesome and was in fantastic condition in June/2021. The track is challenging and fair and the greens putted smooth and fast. The food at the course was excellent and should not be overlooked. The breakfast and lunch selections were absolutely delicious. If you're in the Northwest NM area and you like to golf, put this course on your must play list! You will be pleasantly surprised with your greens fees too - Outstanding value for the venue!
