Piñon Hills Golf Course

Farmington, New Mexico, USANorthwest New Mexico

Piñon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, NM, provides an engaging 18-hole test with mountain-desert styling and well-conditioned greens. This public layout challenges golfers with rolling fairways, strategic bunkering, and scenic foothill views, making it a rewarding stop for players of varied abilities.

Course Overview

Piñon Hills Golf Course, situated in the high desert terrain of Farmington, New Mexico, presents an 18-hole challenge that blends natural foothills with thoughtfully maintained fairways. This public course offers a blend of mountain and desert-style characteristics, where the altitude and open landscape shape both play and visual experience. Stretching over approximately 7,000 yards with a par of 72, Piñon Hills caters to a broad range of golfers, from ambitious low handicappers to those seeking a fair but engaging round.

The layout reveals a course that balances strategic shot-making and natural elements. Rolling fairways thread through rugged outcrops and piñon pine groves, while the greens accommodate subtle breaks that demand close attention to pace and direction. Occasional gusts of wind from the surrounding mesas test club selection, encouraging players to think carefully beyond mere distance. Bunkers are positioned to challenge both tee shots and approaches, demanding precision without overwhelming newcomers.

Conditioning garners repeated praise, with the greens typically smooth and receptive, reflecting careful maintenance despite the region’s arid climate. The course’s elevation also lends a unique feel to ball flight, often offering slightly longer carry distances than sea level counterparts. Though no refreshment cart is available during play, the Grill on the Hill clubhouse stands as a welcoming spot pre-round or after 18 holes, known locally for its hearty fare including the popular Green Chili Cheeseburger.

Accessibility is straightforward for public golfers, with a full-service pro shop and a knowledgeable PGA professional available on-site to assist with questions or lessons. Pace of play can slow during weekend peak hours but has improved with recent management attention. For those planning a round, sturdy footwear and sunscreen are advisable as walking the course reveals subtle elevation changes and exposed sun.

Combining a visually memorable environment with a test of shot variety and course management, Piñon Hills offers a rewarding golf experience that captures the spirit of Northwestern New Mexico’s distinctive landscape.

The golf course was great, however the customer service and how organized they were was absolutely terrible. We had a time time that was close to a tournament finish and we didn’t get on the course until 2 hours later. They need to have a lot more organization

They scheduled us for a no tour tourney weekend and then set a make up Tourney for our trip and did not let us out until 2:30 pm with a 1:20 tee time. Unbelievably bad service and this is all tied to the home 2 suites in town

Quality of the golf course was very nice. Went in the heat of August & was well maintained, no burnt out greens or fairways. Stimp.eter greens were about a 10.5. over all a nice challenge to play too, quite windy on the day I went. Facilities well maintained, pace of play was very good. No refreshment cart when i was there & you have to pay extra for range (& is a little distance to reach it). The price is worth it and the staff were very friendly.

Can't say much other than, this course is so pretty and challenging, especially the greens!! Pace of play is not an issue other than on weekends around the 11am to 2pm start times, it can be a bit slow. Now they implemented the Golf Course Ranger(s) which should help with the pace of play. I would recommend lunch at the Grill On The Hill, and partaking on their Pinon Hills Green Chili Cheeseburger w fries. Luke Tanner is our PGA Club Professional and is quite the gentleman, he's availabile for any questions you may have about our course, along with Chris Jones our GC manager.

This course is awesome and was in fantastic condition in June/2021. The track is challenging and fair and the greens putted smooth and fast. The food at the course was excellent and should not be overlooked. The breakfast and lunch selections were absolutely delicious. If you're in the Northwest NM area and you like to golf, put this course on your must play list! You will be pleasantly surprised with your greens fees too - Outstanding value for the venue!
