Course Overview

Sugar Loaf The Old Course in Cedar, Michigan offers a compelling blend of natural terrain and thoughtful design, inviting players to experience a course that challenges while remaining approachable. This 18-hole public layout stretches across gently rolling hills and dense forest edges, delivering a varied test that demands thoughtful shot selection and strategic play. With total yardage just shy of 6,200 yards and a par of 71, the routing balances open fairway holes with tighter, tree-lined corridors where precision is rewarded.

The course’s front nine is characterized by more generous landing areas, giving players ample room to find comfort off the tee and establish rhythm. Moving into the back nine, Sugar Loaf’s layout tightens noticeably, inviting golfers to focus on course management as fairways narrow and elevation shifts become more prominent. This change in character adds an engaging dimension for players of all levels, as the challenge grows but remains fair.

Surrounded by natural beauty typical of Michigan’s northwest region, the course offers glimpses of woodlands and water hazards that come into play on several holes. The Greens are consistently well-maintained, featuring subtle breaks that test putting skills without feeling punitive. The conditioning throughout the course, including tee boxes and fairways, reflects care that enhances playability.

Golfers will appreciate the welcoming atmosphere matched with affordability. The staff’s friendliness complements the experience, particularly for families and casual players. Cart rentals are readily available, though many enjoy the walk-friendly layout, which incorporates moderate elevation changes without excessive strain.

Sugar Loaf The Old Course suits a broad audience, from novices eager to develop their skills to low handicappers looking for a solid challenge in a relaxed setting. Its proximity to regional attractions like Sleeping Bear Dunes and local wineries adds to its appeal for visitors seeking a rewarding golf outing in a picturesque northern Michigan environment.

Whether aiming for a leisurely round or testing strategic tee shots, players find Sugar Loaf’s blend of natural elements and straightforward golf architecture a reliable choice for memorable play.

Overall course in great shape. Some tee boxes could’ve used some love but rate to play was a steal. Would play again hands down. Pace was solid and loved the course set up. Brought every shot into play. Would recommend to all level of players.

A great deal at $28 for 18 with a cart (October rates). Staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating as I had my 5 year old son who wanted to ride along. They even offered some clubs for him to use. Back nine is tight and tough. Front is a little more open. Definitely a course that would be easier the more you play it. Hopefully I will again next time I’m in town.

Full disclosure, we live basically next to the course. We play it at least a few times a week. I like to walk and it is a great walking course. This course is not the easiest, there are some narrow fairways. The fairways and course are kept up nicely. Top shape! The greens are excellent! You kind of get a taste of everything here, there are uphill shots, downhill shots, some short, easy, reachable in two holes, and monster long holes. It is an excellent course and the staff are super nice!

I enjoy the Old Course even more now that the once abandoned a d blighted ski resort has been torn down and taken back to its natural state. Now you arrive at the course and it's about the course. If you make the trip your 15 minutes from Glen Arbor, 10 minutes from Leeland Fish Town and 20 minutes from Traverse City. Your surrounded by natural beauty, beaches, wineries and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shoreline. We love it so much that we live in the course now! See you on green #3!
