Grizzly Ranch Golf Club

Portola, California, USANorthern Sierra Nevada

Set within the dramatic peaks of the Northern Sierra Nevada, Grizzly Ranch Golf Club offers an 18-hole mountain course defined by pristine conditioning and thoughtful design. Its smooth tee boxes, strategic fairways, and a memorable lakeside finishing hole create a compelling experience suitable for golfers seeking both challenge and natural beauty.

Course Overview

Grizzly Ranch Golf Club presents an immersive mountain golf experience set against the striking backdrop of the Northern Sierra Nevada in Portola, California. This 18-hole course unfolds with precision, weaving through verdant fairways that balance rugged natural terrain with meticulous conditioning. Designed to challenge yet welcome a broad range of players, Grizzly Ranch demands strategic shot-making and rewards thoughtful club selection as the layout shifts gently with the rising topography.

The course’s high-altitude setting shapes every hole, where crisp mountain air carries the sound of your swing and the landscape plays a subtle role in your tactics. Tee boxes are among the smoothest found at any mountain course, offering stable footing and consistency that eases the transition from stance to shot. Fairways cut clean lines across hillsides, defined by native grasses and natural rock formations. Greens respond with true rolls, occasionally guarded by bunkers that stand ready to test precision.

Each hole lends its own character, with the 18th standing out as a dramatic finishing stretch. Approaching this closing hole, a serene lake comes into view, its calm surface reflecting the sky while the iconic lake house watches over the approach. The sights and sounds here create a quiet moment to gather focus before executing your final shots.

Grizzly Ranch operates as a private club but remains accessible to members eager for an elevated mountain golf atmosphere. The pace is thoughtfully managed, keeping groups spaced to maintain a relaxed flow and allow full attention to the surrounding environment. While the course emphasizes walking to enhance the connection to the terrain, carts are available upon request, especially given the moderate elevation changes.

Amenities focus on essential comforts, with a well-appointed clubhouse offering pro shop services and dining. Visitors should note that food and beverage service hours can be limited in the late afternoon, so planning accordingly will ensure a seamless day of play.

For those seeking an honest mountain golf test with remarkable conditioning and a layout that invites exploration without excess difficulty, Grizzly Ranch delivers. It challenges your skills while encouraging a patient, thoughtful approach that lets both nature and strategy shape the outcome of your round.

Perfect golf! Just check it out if you’re in the area or even if you’re not. Lived up to the hype for sure. We played a scramble so I can’t wait to go back play with some buddies! The 18th hole finish is super cool with the lake house to the right watching.

This place is worth every minute of the drive and every dollar you can spend.. I have played every course in the sierras and this is on the top of my list.. like mixing old greenwood with Rock creek in Montana.. one of my favorite golf experiences to date. Sam at the pro shop is a class act and the service and atmosphere is awesome. Love this place. Going back as soon as I can.

Very nice course but amenities suck, we had a 3:40 tee time and by the 9th hole everything was closed to get drinks and food. Also no cart girl so make sure to take drinks from home with you.

The course was truly breathtaking, offering stunning scenery and meticulously maintained greens. The tee boxes were easily the best I’ve ever played on, providing an incredibly smooth and consistent surface for every shot. Overall, the exceptional condition of the course made for a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day of golf. However, I was quite disappointed to find that the restaurant closed so early, at 5 pm. After finishing up a round in the late afternoon, we were hoping to unwind with a meal and a drink, but the early closure really limited that experience. It would have been great if the restaurant stayed open a bit later, especially to accommodate those finishing rounds later in the day. It somewhat detracted from an otherwise fantastic experience at the course.
