Red Lodge Mountain Golf Course

Red Lodge, Montana, USANorthern Rockies

Red Lodge Mountain Golf Course presents a rugged 18-hole public course balanced between approachable mountain golf and strategic challenge. Set in Montana’s Beartooth range, it invites players of varied levels to enjoy open fairways, pine-framed holes, and striking mountain vistas within a relaxed, accessible layout.

Course Overview

Set against the rugged backdrop of Montana’s Beartooth Mountains, Red Lodge Mountain Golf Course offers an 18-hole experience imbued with natural grandeur and challenging play. This public course blends mountain golf’s traditional elements with a straightforward layout that makes it accessible to a wide range of golfers while still presenting strategic options that reward precise shot-making. The elevation shifts provide subtle tests throughout the round, where downhill approaches and angled lies invite thoughtful club selection.

The course’s setting is a raw expression of the northern Rockies, where pines frame most fairways and occasional sweeping views offer reminders of the vast landscape beyond the greens. While not a heavily forested or canyon-carved mountain course, it captures the essence of Montana’s outdoor spirit in its open yet varied topography. Bunkers strategically guard the better positioning zones, calling for careful navigation rather than mere force.

Playability leans toward broad appeal: golfers less experienced will appreciate generous driving corridors, while low handicappers will find rewarding risk-reward opportunities, especially on holes demanding precision over distance. The conditioning has varied in recent seasons, with some players noting challenges on putting surfaces, so planning for soft greens or firm sections depending on timing can influence strategy.

The clubhouse, modest but welcoming, supports players with a casual atmosphere and access to a food truck known locally for standout smashburgers and fresh fries, adding a relaxed twist to the mountain golf experience. Cart availability is standard, though walking is practical for many due to the course’s moderate length and elevation changes.

For travelers seeking mountain golf without the steeper difficulty or expense often associated with big resort courses, Red Lodge Mountain Golf Course offers an honest, approachable option surrounded by Montana’s distinctive skies and peaks. This venue fits best late spring through early fall and pairs well with outdoor adventures in the area. Grassroots charm and expansive views make each round here a direct connection to the region’s open-air character.

Course Highlights

The course showcases natural Montana mountain golf with pine-lined fairways and bunkers placed to challenge shot strategy rather than distance alone. Signature holes offer elevations that test club choice and shot creativity against panoramic mountain views. The food truck adjacent to the clubhouse has gained praise for its quality cuisine, enhancing the post-round experience.

Really hate to leave a 2 star review but these conditions need to be captured. It’s hard to stomach paying $72 for this, the greens were very bad. Greens were hardly alive, fairways were very bumpy, rough was dry and had lots of deep bumps, tee boxes were not level almost anywhere. Views were good but man, should be a $40 round if that. You can tell it was probably out of their hands, but in the meantime, there’s better golf elsewhere. Hopefully it gets fixed soon! The food truck was amazing!

This establishment far exceeded my expectations. I ordered a smashburger with crispy bacon. Well, I'm here to tell you that this smashburger is a 10 plus. This is the third time in life I've experienced a 10 plus in regards to a bacon cheeseburger. The bacon was cooked crispy and the bun was toasted golden brown to perfection. The garlic and onion seasoning really hit it out of the ballpark. If you have time, I HIGHLY recommend the 28 Peaks Kitchen located next to the golf corse clubhouse. The natural cut fries also exceeded my expectations as they were cooked to absolute perfection. First time having a smashburger and I couldn't have been more impressed. Try them out and you be the judge.

The condition of this course is unplayable. Don’t bother! The greens are trashed and 50/50 dirt and grass. It’s so sad that they can charge $70 green fees and not tell you that the greens are unplayable.

Beautiful location and always looked forward to this course but it is in awful condition. Fairways are weeds and overgrown. The greens are half dead. Very disappointed. Worse conditions of any course I’ve played. Carts are equally in disrepair. Save your money until they fix this place.

This course needs to be shut down and completely redone. Paid $240 for my family to golf and wanted to walk off the course after the 5th hole. Don't waste your money.

The greens ( all 18 holes) were the worse greens I have played on in 50 years! We were all excited to play this course as we were in town for a wedding. Don’t bother with this course!! No discounts for the conditions either.
