Los Alamos County Golf Course

Los Alamos, New Mexico, USANorthern New Mexico

Los Alamos County Golf Course blends mountain and desert landscapes across 18 holes of accessible yet engaging golf. The course challenges players with open fairways, well-placed bunkers, and true greens amid expansive high desert scenery. A public course that balances friendly playability with natural beauty.

Course Overview

Situated in the striking high desert landscape of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Los Alamos County Golf Course offers a unique 18-hole experience defined by mountain vistas and crisp, arid air. As a public course, it invites players of all skill levels to explore its layout that combines elements of parkland and desert golf. The course stretches over approximately 6,600 yards with a par of 72, presenting a fair yet engaging challenge that rewards thoughtful shot placement and adaptability to the steady winds common in the region.

The course’s fairways wind through open terrain accented by native grasses and scattered juniper trees that frame multiple holes without overwhelming the view. The greens run true on well-maintained bentgrass surfaces, while bunkers are strategically placed to test the precision of approach shots rather than punish wayward swings. Players often find the back nine more demanding, as elevation changes and tighter corridors require a sharper focus on club selection and shot trajectory.

Los Alamos County Golf Course’s setting provides more than just a physical backdrop; the expansive sky and surrounding volcanic mesas create a dynamic atmosphere that shifts subtly with the sun’s path. Early morning rounds tend to offer calm conditions, whereas afternoons challenge a player’s tempo against the steady mountain breeze.

The clubhouse welcomes golfers with an inviting atmosphere that blends casual comfort and regional character. Dining options highlight local flavors, and the bar remains a favored spot to unwind after a round. Although the driving range is compact, limited to 200 yards with mats only, it serves as a functional warm-up area before venturing onto the course.

Walking the course is encouraged, with gentle elevation changes and well-kept paths making for an enjoyable trek. Players should prepare for the altitude by staying hydrated and wearing sturdy shoes suitable for variable terrain. Whether seeking a relaxed round or to test your game in a distinctive mountain setting, Los Alamos County Golf Course occupies an inviting space in Northern New Mexico’s golf scene.

Course Highlights

The course’s notable elements include its integration into high desert surroundings with panoramic mesas framing many holes. The back nine introduces more strategic elevation shifts and tighter fairways, demanding thoughtful club selection. Greens are bentgrass with consistent speed, and bunkers are designed to challenge accuracy without overwhelming playability. The short driving range operates from mats with a 200-yard limit due to space constraints but remains adequate for warm-up.

Played on 7/18/23. The course is in decent shape and the greens were almost flawless (compared to other courses in this area). The restaurant had good food and the clubhouse was very nice. The only down side was the range is hitting mats only and the maximum distance on it is supposed to be 200 yards. Obviously a fair number of people hit longer than 200 which puts range balls in the fairway of holes 2 & 3. The range issue is strictly a matter of limited space available and they have done about the best they could with the layout.

FYI: Golf course has been closed all of 2025. No work is being done and no estimated time of re opening. Driving range has been broken 4 times in the last 6 weeks that I'm aware of. Call ahead to see if its working before showing up.

Great condition on the greens and fairways. Highly recommended if you are in Taos, NM. Great bar as well. Only drawback is that it doesn't open until 11:00 a.m.

I'm Amazon delivery driver I had two big boxes to deliver to the office, and was about to drop the boxes Marisha didn't even get up to help me open the door. I was struggling to open the door while she sat at her desk watching me struggle. The packages were hers as well ! If I dropped them she would been at fault. Horrible customer service!!!!

I played this course first week of June 2023. The greens are in nice shape and Fairways were pretty good but the grass was a little clumpy around the greens and around the tee boxes. Perhaps they will fill in as summer progresses. The back nine plays a lot more difficult than the front nine. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They have a large eating area in the clubhouse. The burgers there are amazing and they have an incredible selection of meats including bison ostrich kangaroo lamb alligator Etc. Overall a very good experience golfing and socializing afterwards.
