Los Alamos County Golf Course

Los Alamos, New Mexico, USANorthern New Mexico

Set against the striking high desert scenery of northern New Mexico, Los Alamos County Golf Course offers an 18-hole layout that blends approachable fairways with mountain-fed challenge. Well-maintained greens and panoramic views create an inviting round for players seeking both a relaxed pace and a rewarding test.

Course Overview

Los Alamos County Golf Course presents an engaging 18-hole layout that offers a satisfying test for golfers of all skill levels. Located in the high desert region of northern New Mexico, the course merges its unique mountain environment with an approachable design that balances challenge and pace of play. The terrain is a blend of gentle rolling fairways and more rugged features that reflect the distinct character of the surrounding landscape, lending each hole its own identity without overwhelming players with excessive difficulty.

Greens at Los Alamos County are well-maintained and present a reliable putting surface, praised by many for their firm yet fair conditions. The fairways are generally in solid shape, though seasonal growth patterns can render some spots a bit uneven, particularly near tees and fringe areas. Bunkers and natural hazards are strategically placed to influence shot selection rather than entirely punish errant shots, encouraging thoughtful approach play.

Set at an elevation of approximately 7,300 feet, altitude adds a subtle variable to shot distance and ball flight, rewarding players who adjust their club selection carefully. The backdrop includes panoramic views of the Jemez Mountains and typical southwestern flora that shifts colors with the seasons, creating an atmosphere that feels connected to its New Mexican surroundings without overstating its presence.

The clubhouse welcomes visitors with a spacious dining area where a varied menu complements the golf experience, featuring notably impressive burgers and an eclectic range of game meats for those who appreciate diverse flavors. A practice facility with a limited driving range is available, although shot distance is capped due to spatial constraints. The staff is routinely described as friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall visit.

Los Alamos County Golf Course encourages walking but also offers cart rentals, recognizing the course’s mix of elevation changes and walkability. With daylight hours varying through the year, the best times to play are late spring through early fall when weather conditions are most stable. The course carries a reputation for blending a refreshing social atmosphere with a solid golfing challenge, making it a worthwhile stop for residents and visitors exploring New Mexico’s northern landscapes.

Course Highlights

Elevated mountain setting with expansive views of the Jemez Mountains, firm putting greens praised for quality, a practical driving range limited by space, and a clubhouse menu that offers unique game meats alongside classic fare.

I'm Amazon delivery driver I had two big boxes to deliver to the office, and was about to drop the boxes Marisha didn't even get up to help me open the door. I was struggling to open the door while she sat at her desk watching me struggle. The packages were hers as well ! If I dropped them she would been at fault. Horrible customer service!!!!

Great condition on the greens and fairways. Highly recommended if you are in Taos, NM. Great bar as well. Only drawback is that it doesn't open until 11:00 a.m.

Played on 7/18/23. The course is in decent shape and the greens were almost flawless (compared to other courses in this area). The restaurant had good food and the clubhouse was very nice. The only down side was the range is hitting mats only and the maximum distance on it is supposed to be 200 yards. Obviously a fair number of people hit longer than 200 which puts range balls in the fairway of holes 2 & 3. The range issue is strictly a matter of limited space available and they have done about the best they could with the layout.

I played this course first week of June 2023. The greens are in nice shape and Fairways were pretty good but the grass was a little clumpy around the greens and around the tee boxes. Perhaps they will fill in as summer progresses. The back nine plays a lot more difficult than the front nine. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They have a large eating area in the clubhouse. The burgers there are amazing and they have an incredible selection of meats including bison ostrich kangaroo lamb alligator Etc. Overall a very good experience golfing and socializing afterwards.
