Washoe County Golf Course

Reno, Nevada, USANorthern Nevada

Washoe County Golf Course offers an open, approachable 18-hole layout in Reno with a mix of flat and gently rolling terrain. Its heavy sand traps and elevated greens provide subtle challenges, making it a welcoming choice for a wide range of golfers seeking value and playability in Northern Nevada.

Course Overview

Washoe County Golf Course in Reno, Nevada, offers an inviting experience for golfers seeking an accessible yet thoughtfully challenging round. This 18-hole public course is characterized by its mostly flat terrain accented with subtle elevation changes and occasional valleys, providing a gently varied layout that tests strategy without overwhelming players of moderate ability. The course’s open fairways are flanked by heavy sand traps that demand precise iron play, particularly around the greens, where speed and subtlety are rewarded on often fast but fair putting surfaces.

Water hazards and casual water collect in spots, especially near valleys and low areas of certain holes, adding a natural complexity to shot selection. While the course is straightforward overall, the back nine presents a slightly more demanding challenge with elevation changes that influence club choice and require careful navigation.

Greens recently underwent maintenance involving plugging and sanding, which can affect putting conditions, so patience and careful reading are essential. The recently improved conditions highlight the course’s ongoing commitment to playability. The layout suits a diverse range of golfers—from novices appreciating generous fairways to more experienced players honing their precision.

On-site amenities are basic but friendly, with courteous staff at the pro shop ready to assist. Golf carts are available, though some golfers have noted they are gas-powered and may feel different compared to electric carts seen elsewhere. Walkers can enjoy the mostly smooth terrain but should consider sturdy footwear due to some soft and potentially wet patches from casual water along the course.

The surrounding Reno landscape paints a dry, open backdrop under expansive skies, lending a relaxed atmosphere to each round. While food and beverage options are not available on the course, there is a pleasant patio area ideal for post-round reflection and socializing.

Overall, Washoe County Golf Course presents a fair-value, approachable golfing destination with a blend of easygoing holes and subtle tests of skill. It is well suited for visitors and locals looking to enjoy a solid round without the pressures of a highly manicured facility.

Course Highlights

The course is distinguished by wide, open fairways framed by heavy bunkering that requires accurate placement. Elevation shifts on the back nine add strategic depth, while valleys introduce natural water hazards. The greens, often fast and receptive, are a focal point for scoring opportunities. Players will appreciate the relaxed Pace of Play policy and the absence of overly penal rough, making it an ideal venue for golfers looking for a fair but engaging experience.

Golfed here over the weekend. Love the place. Fun course. Not extremely difficult and everyone working there is usually nice. I’m not very good so accidentally hitting into people on opposite fairways as long as they hear a “FORE” they haven’t been upset. It was a gorgeous day and I only lost about 12 balls that I had found on other courses. It was an overall good day for ball loss and my score was awful as always but, I would still recommend it to anyone. Great place to golf and as it get warmer, the patio is really nice after a long round.

Guy in the pro shop was very rude when calling and trying to book a tee time. Will gladly spend my money elsewhere.

It's an easy course, back 9 a little more challenging than the front 9. Reasonably priced, the employees where you check in aren't very friendly, look like they don't want to be there. Other than that good place to play

Nice course to play 18! It's a pretty open course and mostly flat. The sand traps are heavy and the greens were recently plugged and sanded so putting was not that great, but overall it was definitely worth the $55 with a cart. Bring your own food and water because there is nothing available on the course.

The course was in good shape considering how dry it has been. The 90-degree from the cart path rule was in effect due to the amount of water used. There were multiple holes where the fairway was in a valley. Many soft spots where water collected. There was casual water in the bunkers. There were tee and green elevation changes that made the course more challenging with their wide open fairways. The greens were fast but fair. It's really easy to roll a putt 6ft by if you're not careful. The penalties for driving off the fairway weren't too punishing. I didn't lose a single ball, and I sprayed the ball all over the place. The pro shop staff was courteous and helpful. The gas-powered carts took some getting used to, considering most courses have electric carts now. The driving range left some to be desired. The mats were thin and worn. The mats were narrow, leaving only a certain area to be used over and over. I will play this course again when visiting Reno.

They let a 5 someone out that held up the whole course. They didn't let anyone play through. No marshal. The course is in crappy shape. Why does a course do this on a busy Sunday? First time and I won't be back.
