Washoe County Golf Course

Reno, Nevada, USANorthern Nevada

Washoe County Golf Course offers a welcoming public layout with a par-72, 18-hole course that blends open fairways and strategic bunkering. Located near downtown Reno, it provides a fair but engaging test suitable for golfers of all levels.

Course Overview

Located just south of downtown Reno, Washoe County Golf Course presents an approachable yet engaging layout for players seeking an 18-hole challenge in a relaxed, open setting. This public course stretches over 6,200 yards from the back tees, featuring a par of 72 that accommodates a wide range of skill levels. Its largely flat landscape is punctuated by subtle elevation changes, with fairways that carve through gentle valleys and clusters of sand traps positioned to test strategy without overwhelming the casual player.

The course’s openness allows the Nevada sun and breeze to play a constant role, influencing club selection and shot-making decisions. Fairways are generally wide, providing room for errant drives, while the greens demand careful attention. Recently overseeded and sanded, the putting surfaces are smooth but can catch players off guard with their pace, offering a fair but stimulating test for all handicaps. Bunkers carry a heavier presence here, often holding soft sand that can penalize misdirected shots but are strategically placed to frame the holes rather than dominate.

Washoe County’s unpretentious atmosphere is complemented by well-maintained cart paths and a modest practice range, although players should note that the mats have seen extensive use. The course's affordable rates, combined with its forgiving layout, make it a favorite among locals and visitors looking to enjoy a solid round without the stiffness of a high-end club.

While there are no concessions on the course, golfers are encouraged to bring their own refreshments to stay hydrated and energized. The clubhouse offers a casual spot to gather post-round, with seating areas that benefit from views of the course’s sprawling terrain.

For those planning a visit, comfortable walking shoes are recommended if opting to walk, although carts are readily available and commonly used given the course’s generous spacing. A helpful pro shop staff is on hand to assist, ensuring a smooth experience despite the course’s straightforward character. Washoe County Golf Course embodies a genuine golf getaway that balances playability and challenge without excess, inviting players to refine their game amid the dry Nevada landscape.

The course was in good shape considering how dry it has been. The 90-degree from the cart path rule was in effect due to the amount of water used. There were multiple holes where the fairway was in a valley. Many soft spots where water collected. There was casual water in the bunkers. There were tee and green elevation changes that made the course more challenging with their wide open fairways. The greens were fast but fair. It's really easy to roll a putt 6ft by if you're not careful. The penalties for driving off the fairway weren't too punishing. I didn't lose a single ball, and I sprayed the ball all over the place. The pro shop staff was courteous and helpful. The gas-powered carts took some getting used to, considering most courses have electric carts now. The driving range left some to be desired. The mats were thin and worn. The mats were narrow, leaving only a certain area to be used over and over. I will play this course again when visiting Reno.

They let a 5 someone out that held up the whole course. They didn't let anyone play through. No marshal. The course is in crappy shape. Why does a course do this on a busy Sunday? First time and I won't be back.

It's an easy course, back 9 a little more challenging than the front 9. Reasonably priced, the employees where you check in aren't very friendly, look like they don't want to be there. Other than that good place to play

Nice course to play 18! It's a pretty open course and mostly flat. The sand traps are heavy and the greens were recently plugged and sanded so putting was not that great, but overall it was definitely worth the $55 with a cart. Bring your own food and water because there is nothing available on the course.

Golfed here over the weekend. Love the place. Fun course. Not extremely difficult and everyone working there is usually nice. I’m not very good so accidentally hitting into people on opposite fairways as long as they hear a “FORE” they haven’t been upset. It was a gorgeous day and I only lost about 12 balls that I had found on other courses. It was an overall good day for ball loss and my score was awful as always but, I would still recommend it to anyone. Great place to golf and as it get warmer, the patio is really nice after a long round.

Guy in the pro shop was very rude when calling and trying to book a tee time. Will gladly spend my money elsewhere.
