Sierra Sage Golf Course

Reno, Nevada, USANorthern Nevada

Sierra Sage Golf Course offers a compelling public 18-hole challenge just outside Reno, where open fairways and moderately sized greens demand accuracy and smart shot-making. This parkland-style layout features a standout short-game practice area and consistently well-maintained conditions, making it a favorite among golfers seeking value and quality in the Northern Nevada golf scene.

Course Overview

Sierra Sage Golf Course occupies a distinctive place in Reno's golfing scene as a public 18-hole layout that balances accessibility with testing play. Located on Silver Lake Road, this course stretches just over 6,800 yards from the back tees with a par of 72. Its open design is shaped by gently rolling terrain and subtle elevation shifts that coax strategic thinking without overwhelming the player. Unlike heavily wooded courses, Sierra Sage features a wide embrace of fairly sparse trees which frame the fairways without impeding the rhythm of the round. This layout encourages a clean, straight driving game with an emphasis on accuracy, especially since the greens are moderately sized, demanding precise approach shots.

The overall feel leans toward a parkland style influenced by the high desert environment surrounding Reno. The vistas open up across the horizon, offering clear skies and sunlit stretches, especially enjoyable during early morning rounds. Few hazards dominate, but well-placed bunkers guard key landing zones and the greens themselves, offering both visual challenge andrequiring thoughtful club selection. Rolling fairways and a variety of lies add texture to each hole, keeping players engaged throughout.

Sierra Sage’s reputation as a community staple comes partly from its condition relative to price. Course maintenance is consistently praised, especially the greens, which favor a relatively quick pace under the care of attentive staff. The practice area deserves special mention, boasting one of the best short-game facilities in the Reno area with generous turf, varied lies, and an expansive tee box for dedicated drills.

Players of all skill levels will find Sierra Sage approachable yet rewarding. Those aiming to sharpen their accuracy will benefit most here, while casual players can enjoy a relaxed, friendly atmosphere supported by helpful staff. The clubhouse, paired with a popular bar and food service featuring local favorites like the signature wings, rounds out the experience. Whether stopping by for an early tee time or a leisurely afternoon, Sierra Sage delivers a well-rounded golfing option that reflects Reno’s welcoming spirit.

Fun course outside Reno. Some parts were a little worn, but hey, it's a golf course. Wide open and you will only have issues if you aren't hitting it fairly straight. Not many trees. Some elevation changes, but nothing too crazy. The greens were not huge, so accurate approach play is really key to low scores here. Staff was awesome: I showed up here at 6am when they opened and they got me on to play an early round without having booked a tee-time. Great staff, friendly and helpful.

Incredible for early May. Mike and the Staff are always welcoming. Best value in Reno. I wish all the greens Locally were taken care of by Sierra's staff. Also shout out to Larry. He's a gem.

When rating bang for your buck, this course is by far the best in Reno area. Greens are relatively quick, condition is great for the price, service is friendly and it has the best short game practice area in town that’s not behind the gates of private club (100+ yards of grass with a tee box and a huge variety of lies).
