Harbor Springs, Michigan, USANorthern Michigan

Chestnut Valley Golf Course in Harbor Springs offers a harmonious blend of woodland beauty and approachable challenge. With tree-lined fairways and a welcoming clubhouse, it provides a quiet, well-maintained setting suitable for players of all skill levels seeking northern Michigan golf.

Course Overview

Chestnut Valley Golf Course, located just outside Harbor Springs, Michigan, offers an 18-hole test of golf that balances northern woodland charm with carefully designed playability. This public course, crafted by Michigan golf professional Larry Mancour, presents a landscape of tree-lined fairways and varying hole lengths that challenge golfers without overwhelming them. The terrain is typical of northern Michigan's lush forests, with straight, narrow fairways weaving through mature stands of hardwood. It’s a layout that rewards accuracy off the tee and thoughtful course management.

Golfers will find a welcoming environment whether they are beginners seeking a fun round or seasoned players looking to sharpen precision. The conditioning of the course is a frequently praised feature, with smooth greens and well-maintained tees and bunkers. While some of the early holes on the back nine can show signs of dryness during drier months, the rest of the course holds consistent lushness and provides a satisfying flow from tee to green.

Chestnut Valley’s atmosphere is enhanced by the warm, rustic feel of its log home-style clubhouse, which offers panoramic views of the course and a comfortable setting for post-round gatherings. Recently, the on-site restaurant, operated by the same team behind the popular Rusty Saw, has elevated the dining experience, making the course not only a golf destination but also a place to enjoy quality food with scenic views.

Players who value a quieter, less crowded venue will appreciate the peaceful ambiance here, along with friendly and attentive staff. The course encourages walking but carts are available, balancing exercise with convenience. For those planning a round, expect tight fairways framed by towering trees, strategically positioned bunkers, and greens that demand careful putting.

Chestnut Valley stands as a solid choice in northern Michigan, particularly for those who seek a true woodland golf experience in well-kept surroundings without the scale or crowds of larger resorts. Its combination of natural scenery, thoughtful design, and genuine hospitality makes it a noteworthy stop on the region’s golf map.

Chestnut Valley is a true Northern Michigan hidden gem located just a few short miles from Boyne Highlands. Designed by Michigan professional golf legend Larry Mancour, the course has truly come into its own with the newest ownership and management. Tree lined fairways, premiere conditions and one of the quietest golf courses you will ever play. Beautiful log home style clubhouse screams "Pure Michigan". Now that the Rusty Saw restaurant folks are operating "Birdies" restaurant at the golf course it is a food destination as well with stunning views of the course from the restaurant, bar and deck.

Nice course thats good for a beginner or advanced golfer. Easiegreen's, with several tight fairways. Pricey for what you get, but their league is a great way to go.

I felt the cost matched the course. First time there fun course loved the straight long holes bordered with trees typical northern Mich golf. First 3 holes on back 9 were a little dry but after that your back in green and tree lined faraways. Fast greens. Nice course hidden away from the big guys. Staff, cart support, and bar very good and comfortable feeling. We had a nice round of golf.

Golf at Chestnut is always great. You don't get the scenic beauty of this course for this price anywhere else. The new addition of Birdie's Tavern is a huge bonus. If you're in the area, get out for a beautiful round of golf and some dinner!
