Charlevoix, Michigan, USANorthern Michigan

Set amid rolling terrain near Lake Michigan, Dunmaglas Golf Club challenges golfers with a rugged 18-hole layout featuring demanding greens and varied elevation. Its pure golfing focus appeals to players seeking thoughtful shot-making in a scenic, natural environment.

Course Overview

Dunmaglas Golf Club, situated just outside Charlevoix, Michigan, offers an authentic golf experience marked by rugged beauty and a challenging layout. This 18-hole course is deeply focused on the purity of the game, providing a raw, demanding test for golfers eager for strategic shot-making amid a landscape shaped by natural contours and woodlands. The course’s character is defined less by luxury and more by the integrity of its routing and the physical challenge it presents to all levels of players who appreciate serious golf.

Carved into terrain that rises and falls near the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix, Dunmaglas frames many of its holes with sweeping views of water and woods. The topography means no two holes play alike, with elevation changes and well-placed bunkers shaping the angles and forcing decisiveness from the tee. Greens here are known for their speed and subtle breaks, requiring thoughtful reads and precise speed control, a feature that will appeal to golfers who enjoy a cerebral approach to green reading.

The layout rewards accurate driving and iron play but demands careful course management. Fairways vary in width and line, so playability hinges on adapting to conditions and maintaining focus throughout the round. While the course’s condition has fluctuated over time, golfers who respect the game’s traditional challenges find Dunmaglas a worthwhile destination for testing their skills and composure.

The clubhouse and on-site facilities reflect a rustic charm rather than lavish accommodations. Those visiting are encouraged to come prepared for walking, as the terrain can be uneven in spots, and golf carts are available though walking is often preferred to fully appreciate the course’s unique setting.

Dunmaglas Golf Club stands as a reminder of golf’s roots, offering an experience steeped in strategic design and natural features rather than modern conveniences. Players seeking a serious round with demanding greens and a variety of shots will find this course both memorable and enriching.

Course Highlights

This course draws attention with sweeping vistas of Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix visible from multiple tees and greens. Varied elevation demands strategic tee shots, and the greens present challenging slopes and speeds that test short game finesse. Despite a simpler clubhouse and facilities, the layout itself is the highlight, praised for its authentic golf challenge and a handful of standout holes that require precision and thoughtful club selection.

Overall shit experience. You’re paying top dollar for what should be a $40 course. This course has the potential to be top 10 in the state but is extremely under kept. Greens are all cracked with dead patches. Fair ways are patchy. Tee boxes are in even, and practically dirt because the grass is dead. The clubhouse and carts are from the 1980’s. After all of this, they still charge $120 a round. I’ve played $50 courses better kept than this.

The course is amazing, it's definitely seen better days and the place seems understaffed but the experience was awesome. Such a good layout, it's difficult with some truly great holes. Number 7 might be my favorite of all time. Paolo is a great dude! Very welcoming, friendly, and funny. Just don't go here expecting a five star clubhouse or even a drink cart. We paid 75 each for the round and that was spot on. With a few basic improvements this place would be one of the top courses in the state. Just set your expectations appropriately when you pull up and you'll have a great time.

This is a golfers golf course. This is not good for those looking for an experience beyond the golf (clubhouse, dining, etc). Come here to PLAY GOLF and you will be blown away. Excellent course in great condition. Crazy difficult greens in great condition. Terrible clubhouse. Terrible carts.

So much potential, just do some basic maintenance and this would be a gem. Very challenging course with many demanding tee shots. Would not go back.
