Hidden River Golf & Casting Club

Brutus, Michigan, USANorthern Michigan

Hidden River Golf & Casting Club challenges players with an 18-hole layout combining open, links-style terrain with a wooded back nine. Known for excellent conditioning and varied hole designs, it offers a balanced test that suits golfers of many levels amid Northern Michigan’s scenic outdoors.

Course Overview

Hidden River Golf & Casting Club offers an 18-hole layout that presents golfers with a dynamic blend of two distinct atmospheres. The front nine presents a subtle links-inspired character, where open fairways are shaped by gentle breezes that influence shot selection and test course management. Rolling terrain, wide fairways, and carefully placed bunkers create an inviting yet strategic setting that welcomes players of varying skill levels. Moving onto the back nine, the experience transforms as the course dips into a more wooded environment. Mature trees frame the narrower fairways, demanding precision and patience from golfers who prefer a more methodical approach. This dual nature enhances the variety throughout the round, making Hidden River a compelling choice for those seeking both challenge and playability.

Throughout the course, meticulous attention to conditioning shines through. The greens roll true, maintained with care by the on-site superintendent, ensuring that putting remains a satisfying test of touch and speed control. Hidden River's layout rewards thoughtful club selection and strategic shot placement rather than brute power alone.

Located in Brutus, Michigan, the club occupies a scenic rural setting where water hazards and natural contours influence play without overwhelming it. The absence of heavy tree interference on the front nine offers open views, while the back nine’s wooded corridors provide a refreshing contrast that engages golfers throughout their round.

Though primarily focused on golf, the facility also honors its casting club roots, providing a unique combination of outdoor sporting experiences that appeal to enthusiasts of both disciplines. Practical considerations include a pace of play that is well-managed by attentive staff, helping golfers maintain rhythm throughout their round.

For those planning a visit, golf carts are available but walking remains a popular option, especially on the back nine where elevation changes add to the physical aspect of the game. Amenities such as a grill have faced some operational challenges, so prospective visitors should check current food and beverage offerings before arrival.

Hidden River Golf & Casting Club stands out for its well-maintained, thoughtfully designed layout that adapts to different playing preferences and seasons, making it an attractive destination for golfers who appreciate diverse course architecture within a tranquil Northern Michigan landscape.

Course Highlights

The course is distinguished by its dual personality, where the front nine channels links-style openness with strategic bunkering and wind influences, while the back nine weaves through mature woodlands requiring controlled shotmaking. Special attention to turf care yields consistently firm putting surfaces. The integration of natural water hazards adds subtle complexity without dominating play. Hidden River is also notable for combining its golf experience with casting club traditions, offering a unique sporting environment rarely found at typical golf venues.

Fun layout, well maintained, good pace of play. Course will challenge you in different ways. No holes feel redundant. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed due to staffing issues.

Absolutely amazing course. Picked to play here rather than going over to Boyne, and it was the right move. The course has an amazing layout. Front nine has a little links feel to it and the back take you through the woods. It’s in amazing condition. Well worth the price. Joe, the super intendant has done amazing work. Could not recommend this course enough.

What a beautiful course. We played 18 today and found the course in pristine condition. The back was more challenging and still enjoyed the round. Friendly, helpful staff and rangers. The Grill has menu options I don’t usually see . The Wagyu burger was fantastic.

I thought the course was in great shape and the staff were polite and courteous. The only problem I had was the fact nothing was open for food or beverages. They did offer free bottles of water which was wonderful but there was no option to eat or drink anything else. My group was very disappointed there was no food or beverage option. All in all, it was a great course and I can’t give it a 5 out of 5 because of the lack of food and beverages.
