Spruce Run Golf Course

Acme, Michigan, USANorthern Michigan

Spruce Run Golf Course in Acme, Michigan, is a well-maintained 18-hole public layout offering a thoughtful mix of parkland terrain and rolling hills. The course balances approachability for mid-level golfers with enough challenge for the low handicap player, all framed by tranquil northern Michigan scenery.

Course Overview

Spruce Run Golf Course offers an engaging 18-hole layout designed to challenge golfers while providing a rewarding day on the links. Located in Acme, Michigan, this public course extends just over 6,200 yards from the back tees, with a par of 72 that suits a broad range of skill levels. The course’s terrain blends gently rolling hills with stretches of forested areas, creating a mix of parkland character and subtle elevation changes. This balance invites players to test strategic shot-making without overwhelming those newer to the game.

From the first hole, golfers encounter well-groomed fairways framed by natural foliage and occasional sand bunkers that demand careful navigation. Greens run true and offer moderate contours, rewarding precise approach shots and sound putting technique. The course’s design encourages thoughtful play off the tee, as missing fairways often leads to tricky recovery shots amid tree-lined corridors. A particular highlight is the mid-round stretch, where the layout opens slightly, allowing players to judge wind conditions that subtly influence ball flight.

Spruce Run’s atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it approachable for mid to high handicappers while still posing a worthy test for lower-handicap players seeking accuracy and course management challenges. The staff maintain the course’s conditioning with care, keeping fairways lush and bunkers consistently raked. The clubhouse provides essential amenities including a pro shop and casual dining options, ideal for regrouping after a round.

Walking is encouraged here, with gentle slopes and smooth cart paths accommodating players who prefer to experience the course at a more deliberate pace. Early morning tee times can be particularly pleasant, as the surrounding natural scenery comes alive and the air remains crisp.

For those planning a visit, sturdy golf shoes are advised given occasional wet conditions in shaded areas. The course’s accessibility from nearby Acme and Traverse City makes it a convenient destination for day trips or tournament play. Spruce Run Golf Course delivers an honest golfing experience that emphasizes playability without sacrificing challenge, catering to local golfers and travelers alike.

Course Highlights

The course features well-maintained sand bunkers that guard many greens and fairways that reward straight drives. Slight elevation changes provide scenic views of the surrounding northern Michigan landscape. The mid-round holes offer a rare chance to experience more open fairways influenced by steady winds. Conditioning is consistent, with greens that respond well to all shot types. Spruce Run balances playability and challenge, making it a versatile test for a broad golfing audience.

Played the course with a group of 16, was keeping pace the entire time but was told to pick up pace multiple times and even asked to skip a hole….no one behind us?? Don’t understand. Finished the round in 3 hours and 50 minutes. Will not be back and will tell friends to look elsewhere for golf. Ranger needs to check his ego and attitude towards golfers.

This golf course is definitely worth the money. Played the tips from 6200 yards and shot an 88. (I’m currently a 9.6 handicap). It’s a difficult track for sure and makes you be very straight off the tee or else you’ll get punished. Great greens and fairways. Sand bunkers pristine. 👍🏼 Would play again if I’m ever in the area
