Rollingstone Ranch Golf Course

Steamboat Springs, Colorado, USANorthern Colorado Rockies

Set amid the foothills near Steamboat Springs, Rollingstone Ranch Golf Course offers an 18-hole public layout that blends mountain scenery with strategic river crossings. This course challenges golfers with its elevated tees, tree-lined fairways, and fast, well-contoured greens, providing a memorable test for a variety of skill levels.

Course Overview

Rollingstone Ranch Golf Course offers an 18-hole challenge set against the dramatic backdrop of Colorado’s Yampa Valley near Steamboat Springs. This public layout extends over varied terrain, weaving through mountain foothills and alongside the Yampa River. Golfers encounter elevated tees and fairways flanked by tall grasses and mature pines, adding both visual appeal and strategic complexity. The layout demands precision off the tee, as errant shots are often swallowed by the thick rough that guards many holes.

The course is designed to engage a diverse range of players. Skilled golfers will appreciate the risk-reward elements embedded in multiple holes, where river crossings and tree-lined corridors test shot selection and control. Meanwhile, the broad fairways and open tee boxes allow less-experienced players to enjoy a solid round without overwhelming difficulty. Attention to shot placement remains essential throughout, particularly around the well-contoured but fast greens, where reads can prove tricky at first but become clearer with familiarity.

The natural setting lends a rugged beauty to the golf experience, with panoramic mountain views visible from several vantage points. The Yampa River comes into play notably on the back nine, adding an extra layer of challenge and interest as it crosses the course multiple times. While some portions of the course have faced maintenance challenges, especially with fairway conditions and bunker sand quality, the overall layout remains compelling and rewarding for players willing to engage with its features.

Support amenities include a modest clubhouse and a pro shop staffed with local knowledge. Golfers should note that cart paths and practice facilities offer basic functionality, while walking the course is feasible though recommended only in good weather and with appropriate footwear due to varied footing and elevation changes.

Rollingstone Ranch delivers a memorable mountain golf experience that balances natural elements with a course design that calls for thoughtful strategy. Despite some operational and upkeep concerns, the combination of scenery, shot variety, and river-linked holes provides plenty to explore for those seeking golf beyond the flatlands.

Course Highlights

The course stands out for its integration with the Yampa River, which crosses the back nine multiple times, creating strategic shot-making opportunities. Elevated tees offer expansive views of the surrounding mountains, while tree-lined fairways and taller rough heighten the challenge. The greens are firm and fast, rewarding careful approach shots and putting. The natural Colorado mountain setting shapes the character of the course, combining open vistas with protected holes carved through native vegetation.

Another disappointing troon experience this year. First time playing Rollingstone Ranch GC and well, I had some high hopes. It was quite disappointing, most of the fairways had some pretty bad damage, see pictures. The rough was well, rough, looked worse than any city course I’ve played this year, with dirt and crab grass all over. The greens were actually pretty decent. The layout is fantastic with some great challenging tree lined, elevated holes. The bunkers were inconsistent, most of which had a thin cover of sand over top of what felt like concrete underneath. The practice range is a joke with no markers and it just tapers off, not even sure that you can use a driver on it, is that a practice green of for chipping? Who knows, it’s not labeled. The staff was friendly, however, the facilities were lacking, poor clubhouse layout. No where to dispose of rubbish throughout the course, so it just piles up in the cart. The second worse maintained course I’ve played this year after funny enough Ridge at Castle Pines North which is also a Troon course, what are these yahoos doing?! Worth closer to $50 not the going rate of $150 until they get the course in substantially better shape. If you’re coming up to steamboat, skip this place and go to Haymaker instead, heard it’s in much better shape for the same money.

Amazing course. Spectacular views and the friendliest staff the course was plenty challenging but easy enough to get around for an average golfer. Will definitely be returning.

I tell you what the staff at Rollingstone Ranch are superb! I booked a tee time through GolfNow went through the entire payment, then the app told me the time wasn’t available anymore. I went to the pro shop and explained what happened. They said they weren’t sure what happened with the app as they still had the time available, and would match the deal I would have gotten through the app! Phenomenal staff thank you everyone! Had a great time at the course and experienced some things you don’t get everywhere.

This course was hard but it was fun and you can see a moose on this course too. You will lose a lot of balls if you're not precise because the grass there is very tall and it just is gone after that

This was one of the more beautiful courses I've golfed. It's right along the mountains and the back nine crosses the Yampa River a few times. The greens were hard to read but probably is easier after a few rounds. If I'm back in Steamboat Springs, I'll definitely go back!

This was the most expensive course I’ve ever played at 235$ a person and it was extremely uneventful, lacking service and not in “perfect condition.” The front desk guy didn’t even give me a total when he rang me up and took my card. But I knew it was going to be pricey. We had to carry our clubs to the cart. The carts are extremely slow and loud. We got rained on a few times and never offered a towel or anything. The cart would warn us for not repairing our divots but it also had no sand in it to repair them in the first place. No sand next to tee markers. Slow, overbooked play.. We left after 16 holes due to rain and no one in the front offered to help us unload/clean and move our stuff into the car. I wouldn’t recommend going here. You’re better off playing twice at evergreen or going to haymaker. Waste of money. I’ve seen courses with better service and conditions that cost half of what they are asking for.
