Northstar Golf Course

Truckee, California, USANorthern California

Northstar Golf Course in Truckee offers an 18-hole mountain-inspired layout that balances approachability with strategic shots across rolling parkland fairways. With scenic pine settings and water hazards on the back nine, this public course welcomes golfers of all levels seeking a memorable Sierra Nevada round.

Course Overview

Located in the scenic environs of Truckee, California, Northstar Golf Course offers an 18-hole experience that blends mountain-inspired challenge with approachable playability. Positioned at a higher elevation near the Sierra Nevada range, the layout carries a balanced mix of wide fairways and strategic hazards that invite both casual golfers and those seeking a thoughtful test of their game. The course is public and designed to accommodate players of varied skill levels, making it a favored destination for locals and visitors alike.

Northstar showcases a parkland style course with pockets of dense pine trees framing many holes, offering natural contours that influence shot selection. Water hazards come into play on several holes, particularly on the back nine where doglegs add a welcome layer of complexity. The greens are designed for subtle breaks, rewarding well-planned approach shots and precise putting. Its rolling terrain and moderate elevation shifts create an engaging rhythm without overwhelming less experienced players.

The setting provides notable visual appeal with mountain views peeking through pines and a crisp alpine atmosphere that refreshes as you move through the round. This environment enhances focus and brings an added sensory dimension - the scent of pine, the light rustle of wind, and occasional glimpses of local wildlife.

Amenities include well-maintained practice facilities, a pro shop stocked for all your equipment needs, and a full-service grill that delivers satisfying meals and refreshments to keep energy levels high. Golf carts are available, but the course’s walkability appeals to those wishing to embrace a more traditional golfing tempo. Staff are recognized for their friendliness and professionalism, consistently elevating the overall experience.

Seasonally, the course can present varied conditions. After winter, certain areas including greens can recover slowly, so checking for updates on course conditions before planning a visit is recommended. Nonetheless, Northstar remains a compelling choice in the Truckee golf scene, balancing scenic mountain golf with accessible yet stimulating play.

Whether you’re a regional regular or planning a trip to the Sierra Nevada, Northstar Golf Course offers a memorable round where natural beauty meets strategic design with straightforward hospitality.

Course Highlights

Northstar’s design integrates classic parkland elements with mountain terrain, featuring tree-lined fairways and a series of water hazards primarily on the back nine. The course offers multiple doglegs that challenge shot shaping, while the gentle elevation shifts add variety without demanding strenuous climbs. The combination of well-positioned bunkers guarding greens and natural alpine backdrops enrich the playing experience. Its approachable yet strategic routing makes it a popular choice for both local players and visitors.

The 1016 crew and I have been going to Northstar golf course for the last 10+ years, this is the place to be. They have everything, food, cart girls and fast greens. I’ll be going here for years to come.

Staff was very accommodating and friendly from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. The cart personnel, grill staff, starter and shop staff were all great. However, my low rating comes from course conditions. I am new to the area and this is my first time playing Northstar. After reading other reviews and having played other courses in the area that are in great shape I just booked a tee time online. I did not think to call and ask about course conditions. Needless to say I was VERY disappointed as I made my way around Northstar. At least 2 temporary greens and most of the regular greens were very bumpy as they have not recovered from aeration. Many fairways and tee boxes were also bare. I was told by staff that all the damage to the course is from the hard winter. That is understandable, I just wish that information was stated on the website.

The service at the course was excellent. The course layout & design is very good and I enjoyed walking the course. It was fun & challenging. The back nine had multiple dog legs and water on most of the holes.

We played the course July 20th. The staff always professional. The condition of the course is close to being non playable. Fairways aren’t bad. The greens so bad they had posted signs that read automatic 2 putts. Bunkers should be marked under repair. It’s my opinion in order to save the reputation of the Northstar complex management should suspend play until the course is repaired. Photo 1-bunker 2-tee box photo 3 green

My favorite local Truckee/North Lake course just keeps getting better each year after rough couple years over COVID. Been playing here every other week and greens are rolling better than some of the $300+ round courses in the area. Love the full service staff and all around laid back atmosphere. A must if you're a local or coming up for the weekend. Keep up the great work Northstar!

Check in attendant was all on his own yet kind and helpful. Course was beautiful but quite wet in areas and too tough for me with hidden water hazards and curves.

Course has very different front and back 9 that are fun and challenging. Staff was very very friendly and helpful - would play again.
