Course Overview

Gray's Crossing Golf Course in Truckee, California, offers an 18-hole championship layout that stands out in the Sierra Nevada mountain region through its compelling blend of natural beauty and strategic design. This public course challenges golfers with a mountain-style setting where pine forests frame sweeping fairways, while shimmering lakes and rugged terrain demand thoughtful shot-making. The elevation changes subtly influence club selection and ball flight, introducing an engaging dynamic that rewards careful planning and precision.

At just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, Gray's Crossing tests players with a par 72 course that balances risk and reward on nearly every hole. Golfers encounter a variety of hole designs, from reachable par 5s that encourage aggressive play to demanding par 3s where water hazards prompt generous respect. The greens, renowned for their smoothness and subtle breaks, require controlled speed and a keen eye, adding an extra layer of intrigue as putts tail off toward edges guarded by well-placed bunkers.

The course is well suited for players of all skill levels, with multiple tee boxes providing options to tailor the experience. Low handicappers will appreciate the challenge posed by length and natural obstacles, while higher handicappers find generous fairway widths and forgiving rough that allow for strategic recovery. Walking is welcomed, though the mountain terrain suggests sturdy shoes and moderate stamina are advisable for a full round.

Amenities include a modern clubhouse offering casual dining and a pro shop stocked with essentials for a mountain golf experience. The staff maintains attentive service throughout the day, ensuring pace of play remains steady without feeling rushed.

I played both Old Greenwood and Gray’s Crossing on 7/4 and 7/5. Both courses are tournament grade courses. Courses are in great shape tees to greens. Personally, I like Gray’s Crossing better because of the layout and the view. Staffs are very friendly. Had a wonderful time.

Honestly, the course is great but this is for their events F&B team. I had a golf event their two years ago and had my vendors sign the CC authorization forms. Apparently they didn't go through and the course is now shaking me down for the money. HIGHLY recommend not doing events there, it was a mess.

The pacer play was excellent. The greens were in great shape so were the fairways. The rough is tough, but that’s what you get for not hitting the short errors.

All around amazing course. Staff are great, cart service was wonderful, and the views and setting of the course are tremendous. Of the two sister courses, Old Greenwood definitely takes the cake but Grays crossing is tremendous as well and always gets my recommendation. Some very getable holes, depending on your distance and tee you can maybe drive a couple of the Par4s. Greens were flying this day but was faster than normal, and not always the case. Very fun course, wonderfully kept, recommend to anyone.

Gray's needs water at the range or first tee for drinking. Also brushes at the club cleaning station. AND good sunscreen available at the range. Old Greenwood has all that, why not Gray's?
