Lake Redding Golf Course

Redding, California, USANorthern California

Lake Redding Golf Course is a public nine-hole course set in the rolling landscapes of Northern California. Focused on approachable play and gradual improvements, it offers a blend of accessible fairways and varied challenges, attracting beginners and seasoned golfers alike.

Course Overview

Lake Redding Golf Course offers a distinctive experience shaped by its nine-hole layout and its location in Northern California’s serene landscape. Situated at 1795 Benton Drive in Redding, this public course embraces a relaxed pace that encourages frequent play and social rounds. The terrain is gently rolling, creating fairways that weave with natural water features and pockets of mature trees. While the course’s condition currently reflects ongoing renovation efforts, there remains a clear sense of potential that invites golfers to watch its evolution closely.

This shorter course focuses on accessible play, with reachable par 4s and approachable par 3s that reward strategic shot-making rather than length. The fairways and rough can present some uneven areas, challenging players to adapt their game especially in wetter conditions typical of the local climate. Greens have seen some unevenness but continue to test putting skills with subtle contours and slopes. Players will find that managing approach shots with care is key to scoring well here.

The setting is informal but welcoming, attracting both beginners looking for steady improvement and more seasoned players who appreciate a course with character and space to practice varied shots. The layout meanders through a mix of grassland and small water hazards, requiring attention to course management with each hole.

Amenities include rental golf carts and pull carts, offering flexibility for those who prefer not to walk, though walking remains practical for most. Staff efforts to enhance course conditions have been visible in recent seasons, with a commitment to improving turf health and playability.

For golfers planning a visit, mid-morning tee times on weekdays often offer the best conditions before afternoon sprinkler schedules begin. Expect a casual environment where local players intersect with visitors drawn to the course’s accessible challenge and its promise of ongoing renewal. Lake Redding is a fitting stop for those seeking a straightforward experience to sharpen their skills while enjoying fresh air and northern California’s unique light.

Course Highlights

The course features a compact nine-hole design with water hazards and mature trees providing natural challenges. Recent ownership changes have sparked renovations aimed at improving turf conditions and greens. Playability is balanced between reachable par 4s and strategic par 3s, making shot placement crucial.

Golf this course very frequently, about 5 times a week. I know they are trying very hard to repair this course but recently have tried to golf in the middle of the day and all the sprinklers were turned on. The entire 9 holes had sprinklers going. Maybe should not have them going on a Saturday afternoon. Did not golf because of this. 🤨

I have been playing golf at lake Redding since the late 1970's. It has always been a fun course to play. I've seen the course through good and not so good conditions, with a few owner changes. Recently the new owners have put in a lot of hard work this last year to make this course mostly enjoyable again!

I am typing this as I am sitting on the tee box of the ninth hole, waiting to finish a round that took way too long to play. I’ve played here quite a lot of times, and the course is getting in better shape over time which is nice. That being said, the pace of play is atrocious. They do nothing to make sure you aren’t waiting 10 minutes at each tee box, and almost every time you come out there’s a long line from the first tee all the way to the ninth tea and it’s insanely backed up. Today alone I saw two groups of 5 and also a group of 6, no wonder the course is always backed up. I get it’s a local place and everyone is all “buddy buddy” with each other, but if they could just have the worker keep an eye on the pace of play and let the slow groups know to let people pass or to play faster, I think it’d solve the issue. Update: The course conditions have worsened a bit. Had to knock off another star.

Nice atmosphere, but the course is rough. I lost a number of golf balls in the fairways due to the weedy conditions. A few of the holes had water in the cup. Students get free club rental!

Fun layout. Reachable par 4’s. Super soggy cart paths and fairways. Cart paths are rough. Greens are SO bad. Worst putting experience I’ve dealt with. The grass is overgrown or dirt/patchy on every hole. Employees were very kind. They have golf carts for rent or pull carts. Renovations are happening soon due to the course being purchased by a new owner last September. Course has potential, looking forward to seeing if the greens turn around.
