Alta Sierra Country Club

Grass Valley, California, USANorthern California

Alta Sierra Country Club offers a mountain-edge 18-hole golf experience that balances approachability with strategic challenges, making it ideal for golfers of various skill levels. Set against the Sierra Nevada foothills, the course combines gentle elevation shifts with well-positioned hazards to create engaging play in a relaxed environment.

Course Overview

Alta Sierra Country Club in Grass Valley, California, presents an 18-hole course that blends approachable play with a mountain setting that invites both casual golfers and serious players to test their skills. The layout meanders through gentle elevation changes and mature trees, creating a scenic, parkland-style experience framed by the Sierra Nevada foothills. Designed with accessibility in mind, Alta Sierra offers a fair yet engaging challenge, making it well suited for golfers seeking a round that balances playability with variety.

The course yardage spans from comfortable tees inviting higher handicaps to more demanding angles and elevated greens for low handicappers aiming to sharpen their short game. Key holes feature strategically placed bunkers and tricky green complexes, which encourage thoughtful shot selection rather than just raw power. While the terrain is predominantly gentle, subtle undulations on the fairways reward precise approaches and creativity around the greens.

Amenities include a clubhouse that supports both social gatherings and casual dining, offering respite after a round or a practice session. Although Alta Sierra operates as a public facility, it often attracts players seeking a quieter alternative to busier mountain courses in the region. Walking the course is practical and enjoyable, with well-maintained cart paths and helpful signage guiding players smoothly through each hole.

Players considering a visit should plan for a mountain environment where weather can shift quickly; mornings might bring crisp air and occasional fog, while afternoons typically clear to sunlit fairness. The course’s condition can vary seasonally but generally maintains a solid standard, though golfers are encouraged to book during the less busy parts of the week for the best pace of play.

Whether you’re aiming to improve your swing or simply absorb the calm of northern California’s golfing landscape, Alta Sierra offers a measured challenge within a relaxed setting. It rewards attention to detail and delivers a round peppered with natural beauty and thoughtful design. Perfect for families, beginners, and mid-level players, it’s an inviting stop in the Grass Valley golf scene.

Course Highlights

Got a lesson from Nic. He was very friendly and all together a great teacher. I managed to play my best round of golf after 2 lessons which were one week apart. After watching me whack a few balls he gave me some really good suggestions. It felt awkward at first, but I hit enough balls at the range to get the hang of it. I highly suggest getting a lesson if you struggle at golf and want to up your game.

Play the course on February 26. Most if not all of The Greens had either a fungus or something that caused dead areas and these were sanded Which obviously made play challenging on The Greens! There are several temp tea boxes, which are not really tea boxes nor level. The existing key boxes do not appear to have any work being done other than perhaps some grass seed thrown on, We played on a weekday and did not see any maintenance people out on the course doing any work whatsoever, this is usually not a good sign. Golf Moose was $75 for two players which was OK but I would not be happy if I paid full price for this course!

Come to Alta Sierra where you can watch complete drunk idiots suck at golf and shank balls over and over with their pants down, so much in fact I got it on video. Come to Alta Sierra where every employee couldn't care less about the absolute clowns 'playing golf' in front of us, especially the Marshall who acted like we were out of line for complaining to him and expecting him to do his job. Completely ruined a decent day of golf. The course is not in great shape, but it's a cute track, impolite bar tenders to apathetic Marshalls, good luck if you decide to waste your money here.
