Course Overview

Alta Sierra Country Club offers a welcoming 18-hole layout set amid the rolling foothills of Northern California’s Grass Valley. This semi-public course balances approachable play with moments of strategic challenge, making it a suitable destination for golfers seeking a relaxed yet engaging round. The course unfolds over natural terrain, combining gentle elevation shifts with meandering fairways, framed by pine and oak trees that shape the character of each hole. While not a mountain resort course by strict definition, its elevated position grants subtle vantage points and cooling breezes that influence club selection and shot shape.

The playability leans toward the mid-to-high handicap golfer, though careful positioning will reward better players. Fairways provide ample width, inviting ambitious drives, yet strategically placed bunkers guard well-contoured greens, requiring thoughtful approaches. Some holes wind along creek banks, introducing natural water hazards that underscore the importance of precision. The putting surfaces are moderately undulating, offering test of touch without overwhelming even casual players.

Alta Sierra’s clubhouse serves as both a social hub and a comfortable base, with dining options and a pro shop catering to members and guests. Lessons are also available here, making the course appealing to those aiming to sharpen their skills. While the course’s maintenance has had variability, recent efforts suggest ongoing improvements to turf quality and course conditions.

Walkers are welcomed, with terrain rolling steadily enough to allow for an enjoyable trek. Good footwear is advised, especially after early morning dew or light rains common in the region. For those arriving to play, tee times are best scheduled in advance, particularly on weekends when local interest peaks.

Alta Sierra Country Club blends natural Northern California landscape with an inviting golf experience. Its modest challenges reward strategic play, while the peaceful environment offers a respite from busier urban courses nearby. This is a course that encourages steady improvement and enjoyment, welcoming players ready to embrace its blend of nature and game.

Course Highlights

Come to Alta Sierra where you can watch complete drunk idiots suck at golf and shank balls over and over with their pants down, so much in fact I got it on video. Come to Alta Sierra where every employee couldn't care less about the absolute clowns 'playing golf' in front of us, especially the Marshall who acted like we were out of line for complaining to him and expecting him to do his job. Completely ruined a decent day of golf. The course is not in great shape, but it's a cute track, impolite bar tenders to apathetic Marshalls, good luck if you decide to waste your money here.

Play the course on February 26. Most if not all of The Greens had either a fungus or something that caused dead areas and these were sanded Which obviously made play challenging on The Greens! There are several temp tea boxes, which are not really tea boxes nor level. The existing key boxes do not appear to have any work being done other than perhaps some grass seed thrown on, We played on a weekday and did not see any maintenance people out on the course doing any work whatsoever, this is usually not a good sign. Golf Moose was $75 for two players which was OK but I would not be happy if I paid full price for this course!

Got a lesson from Nic. He was very friendly and all together a great teacher. I managed to play my best round of golf after 2 lessons which were one week apart. After watching me whack a few balls he gave me some really good suggestions. It felt awkward at first, but I hit enough balls at the range to get the hang of it. I highly suggest getting a lesson if you struggle at golf and want to up your game.
