Ould Newbury Golf Club

Newbury, Massachusetts, USANortheastern Massachusetts

Ould Newbury Golf Club offers a scenic 9-hole public course with elevated greens and coastal marsh views that invite golfers of all skill levels. This well-maintained layout balances subtle challenges with approachable play, complemented by a friendly clubhouse and relaxed dining overlooking the final green.

Course Overview

Ould Newbury Golf Club presents an engaging and approachable 9-hole layout that showcases classic New England golf without overwhelming visitors. Located along Newburyport Turnpike in Newbury, Massachusetts, this public course invites golfers of all levels to navigate a course characterized by elevated greens and tee boxes that demand thoughtful club selection and course management. The terrain gently undulates throughout, creating subtle challenges without sacrificing playability for beginners or higher handicappers.

The setting captures a unique coastal-New England ambience with views stretching toward nearby salt marshes, lending an ever-present sense of place. Those marshland breezes influence ball flight and pace of play, particularly on the back nine, where strategic positioning offers reward. Native grasses edge several holes, and carefully maintained fairways funnel shots toward greens guarded by a mixture of bunkers and natural slopes, subtly testing accuracy while maintaining fair escape routes.

Players often remark on the quality of the turf here, with well-conditioned fairways and greens that hold putts but also allow the subtle breaks typical of coastal courses. While the layout is compact, thoughtful tee placements maximize variety, allowing repeat visits to feel fresh. The modest length caters to those looking to sharpen short game skills or enjoy a quick yet stimulating round.

Off the course, the clubhouse provides a welcoming hub featuring a pub with a refined but casual menu. Its elevated deck overlooks the 9th green, an ideal vantage point to soak in the surroundings while enjoying a meal or post-round drink. The staff’s friendliness adds to the inviting atmosphere, making Ould Newbury more than just a course but a nice community gathering spot.

Players should note that proximity to marshland can bring occasional insects during warmer months, so insect repellent is recommended. Walking is completely viable here, with well-maintained pathways and approachable terrain; sturdy shoes will enhance comfort. The course’s signage is functional but could benefit from enhancements to better guide first-timers through certain blind shots.

Ould Newbury is a rewarding choice for golfers seeking a well-kept, scenic 9-hole experience where natural features challenge yet never frustrate, and approachable design encourages steady improvement and enjoyment in the heart of coastal Massachusetts.

Course Highlights

The course features elevated greens and tee boxes that introduce subtle complexity to shot-making. Coastal salt marsh views frame several holes, bringing natural beauty and variable wind conditions into play. The 9th hole provides a memorable finish with a green visible from the clubhouse deck, ideal for post-round relaxation. The layout’s approachable length and conditioning offer a balanced challenge catering to a broad range of golfers.

Great day at Ould Newbury! Greens and fairways in great shape. Suggestion to help those new to the course would be to have more signage to the next hole. Plus a marker on the few fairways that are blind shots. Example: 2nd hole we were actually aiming for the wrong green. When we came around to the green we were mistakenly driving to, the group on 2 did the same thing. We had lunch on the deck; burgers, subs, salad and cocktails...all good! *View of the 9th green from the deck. "Watch out for errant balls."

Had me at hello. When driving diwn old rt1ski you would expect to find a few things...... Well kept ✔ Kinda friendly sure 1/2 ✔. This was me first day here and boy did they get me good. Presentation is fine, club also. As for forthright, not so much. Good business and good 9 holes are not always equal.

Scenic and challenging 9-hole course. Due to its proximity near a marsh, can get a bit buggy. Friendly staff, easy to find, charming club house.
