Course Overview

Donald Ross Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana, offers a compelling experience for golfers drawn to courses where classic design meets accessible play. This 9-hole layout preserves the straightforward charm that has served neighborhood golfers well while delivering a course that invites players of all skill levels to test their short-game finesse and strategic shot-making.

The course’s terrain is characterized by gently rolling fairways framed by short rough, which reduces frustration on errant shots and encourages offensive play. Fairways are generous yet trickier than a casual glance suggests, requiring thoughtful club selection and course management. The greens are generally smooth but tend to play on the slower side, adding an extra layer of challenge to scoring—demanding patient and precise putting.

Donald Ross Golf Club’s character lies in its approachable scale paired with thoughtful maintenance. Players often note the well-kept bunkers that shape the contours around the greens, subtly influencing approach shots and requiring attention to detail. The relatively short course length makes it ideal for a quick round, yet the layout’s nuances prevent it from feeling overly simplistic. It suits those looking for an enjoyable, casual round with room to sharpen their skills without the intimidation of a championship-length track.

Visitors appreciate the course’s quiet Fort Wayne setting, where natural light filters through mature trees that line the fairways. The balance between open spaces and tree-laced boundaries provides clear sightlines while still introducing strategic complexity.

As a members-only facility, access is reserved for those within the local community and their guests, offering a welcoming atmosphere without the bustle of public courses. Walking is encouraged, with mostly smooth turf and minimal elevation changes, making the course friendly for players who prefer to navigate on foot.

Donald Ross Golf Club represents a distinctive blend of historic influence and modern upkeep that serves both casual players and those eager to refine their game. It stands as a reliable option to enjoy good golf without the usual pressures or extended commitment that come with larger courses.

Course Highlights

This course highlights short rough areas that aid in shot recovery, bunkers thoughtfully placed near the greens to test approach shots, and a landscape defined by mature trees offering both challenge and shade. The greens are smooth, but slow (most of the time). The fairways are fine. The rough is short, which makes it easy to find your errant shot. But there is something I can't identify that leads to scores higher than they should be for me. The "slope/rating" say it's a simple course. But it isn't for me. Note that this is a 9-hole course. The price is pretty good, so it's a good place for a quick 9.

The greens are great and the course was well manicured for a local 9 hole. Definitely would have been 4 stars if the guy running the clubhouse wasn’t such a douche. He had no reason to be such an a**hole.

About 15 years ago, when I was 7, I drowned in the Saint Mary's River. I was dead for 5 minutes. I dont remember going into a light, and I dont remember a flash of darkness. What i do remember was the fog. I felt my body lift out of the water, and I was moved to the land. I couldn't tell you how I moved, or how I was lifted, just that I got there. Then, when I turned around, the water in the river stood still. I rember the pale light that filled to air, almost like moonlight, but when I looked up, there was no moon, only darkness. I looked back at the river, and the water was vibrating. It danced. Above it, a man was floating. That man was Donald Ross. He said something to me, but I couldn't understand it. Before I could ask him what he said, I awoke in a hospital bed.

Haven't played this course since it has gone to 9 holes. Course is in great shape, greens are soft and played at decent speed, and overall...the course is beautiful!

First time playing this course. For a 9 hole course, it was in excellent condition. Fairways, rough, bunkers, and most importantly the greens were all in great shape. We seen 3 or 4 maintenance people out working the course and changing pins as our group was playing. There’s plenty of courses in the area with similar conditions that charge twice the price. This has become one of my top favorite courses in town all while charging a reasonable and fair price.

What a joke of a golf course what place doesn't allow singles to play a round 3 days before the holiday this course and the pro shop guy on the phone was a complete jerk to me I will never be golfing here again.
