The Golf Club at South Hampton

St. Augustine, Florida, USANortheast Florida

The Golf Club at South Hampton offers an 18-hole public course with open fairways, strategic doglegs, and approachable design suited for a range of golfers. Its spacious layout invites bold drives while bunkers and water hazards require thoughtful navigation, complemented by solid practice facilities and typical Floridian scenery.

Course Overview

The Golf Club at South Hampton presents an 18-hole challenge set within the rolling landscapes of St. Augustine, Florida. This public course leans into its open, airy layout, inviting players to let loose with their drives amid generous fairways that encourage aggressive play and thoughtful shot shaping. The course flow incorporates a series of doglegs and subtle elevation changes that give each hole its own character without overwhelming the overall experience. While the terrain is generally forgiving, several holes require strategic placement to navigate the well-positioned bunkers and occasional water hazards, keeping golfers engaged from the first tee through the final putt.

The course’s broad corridors and approachable tee boxes make it accessible for a variety of skill levels, yet it holds enough complexity to challenge more accomplished players seeking to test their course management. The fairways are maintained reasonably well, especially after recent rains, providing a reliable lie for most shots. Bunkers contain real sand, adding a genuine hazards element often missing from similar facilities. However, the greens show signs of wear with uneven surfaces that can turn putting into a test of patience and tactical reading. Nevertheless, the locations tend to be set in playable zones, rewarding careful approach shots.

Beyond the layout, South Hampton offers above-average practice facilities, including a driving range, multiple chipping areas, and a dedicated putting green, allowing visitors to fine-tune every facet of their game. Wildlife sightings complement the playing experience, as the Florida environment lends occasional natural encounters that underscore the course’s outdoor setting.

Golf carts are readily available, with walking permitted by request for those who prefer to travel on foot. The staff is generally welcoming, contributing to a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. For those considering a visit, timing rounds during the cooler months will enhance comfort and playability.

The Golf Club at South Hampton balances open design with thoughtful challenges, delivering a straightforward golf experience that welcomes a broad range of players eager to engage with Florida’s golfing landscape.

Played this course on 15 May, 2025. The rains last week brought some life to the fairways and tee boxes, as generally the grass was decent to hit from. The greens are in sad shape, as all of the recent reviews have remarked. It does appear they are keeping the hole location in the better part of each green. I was able to 2-putt 16 of the 18 greens, as once I got the ball within 3-5 feet of the hole, the grass was fairly reliable. On a positive note - the entire staff was very friendly.

Been to South Hampton multiple times. You can tell they are always looking to improve their course. Pace of play is smooth. Course has a nice play. Golf carts are improved. You will definitely see wild life.

The course was in FAIR CONDITION as best. The greens were not good at all. You could putt on them but there was damage all over them. Fairways were passable. It seems like they are trying to get it back in shape. For the cost of $75 it was NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Sorry SH, shouldn’t charge that much for that condition.

Visited this course on 5/5/25 and the greens were as bad as I have ever seen. Fairways and T boxes playable. Bunkers very hard. No need to take putter at all. Impossible to putt on these greens. Absolutely not worth $70 at all. Save your time and money.... play elsewhere. Photos of hole 18 and it was one of the best.

Played course on January 14th, 2024. Pro shop experience was okay. The guy at the front desk kinda seemed over the whole day which made the experience not so great but I get it. We have all had those days. The practice facilities are above average. Good range, multiple chipping greens, and a putting green. As for the course it is pretty wide open and allows you to swing the driver freely. There are a lot of dog legs on the course and makes you think of the next shot. The tee boxes are in good shape. The fairways have a few hard spots but not many. Bunkers have actual sand inside which make bunker shots realistic. As for the greens, they are not terrible but have some rough spots that need some attention. The greens also are bumpy which make it hard to be consistent on putting at times. However, course was fun to play and if I am ever in the area again, I would definitely play this course again.
