Slammer & Squire Golf Course

St. Augustine, Florida, USANortheast Florida

Slammer & Squire Golf Course in St. Augustine blends approachable parkland design with thoughtful challenges suitable for a wide range of golfers. Its well-kept fairways and inviting greens make it a favored spot for locals and visitors seeking enjoyable golf near Florida’s historic district.

Course Overview

Slammer & Squire Golf Course, located in St. Augustine, Florida, offers an 18-hole public layout designed to balance challenge with accessibility. Positioned near the historic heart of the city, the course presents a parkland-style setting defined by wide, manicured fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and a collection of gentle water hazards that reward thoughtful shot placement. The moderate undulations and generous greens accommodate a range of players, from those seeking a relaxed round to seasoned golfers looking to sharpen their skills.

The course's design fosters a steady rhythm, moving from one hole to the next with minimal forced carries or overly penal features. Fairways are typically inviting, encouraging moderate risk-reward decisions without the frustration of harsh margins for error. While not intended as a championship-level challenge, the course still demands accuracy from the tee and touch around the greens, with several holes featuring subtle breaks and well-positioned bunkers guarding scoring opportunities.

Maintenance throughout the year keeps the fairways and greens in good condition, although seasonal weather may affect turf quality; players visiting in the dry season generally experience firmer ground and faster putting surfaces. The course is popular among locals and visitors alike, with a welcoming atmosphere supported by attentive staff and facilities that include a well-equipped pro shop and practice areas.

Slammer & Squire’s location near the World Golf Hall of Fame adds historical interest without dominating the golf experience. Amenities such as cart rentals are available, though walking remains feasible for those seeking a traditional round. The layout’s balance between walkability and ride-friendly terrain makes it a flexible choice for various playing preferences.

For golfers planning a visit, light rain and occasional warm weather can impact conditions, so timing rounds earlier in the day is advised to avoid afternoon heat and maintain pace of play. The course’s approachable design makes it an inviting stop for golfers looking to enjoy Florida’s scenery without facing extreme challenges, offering a solid golf outing rooted in the region’s developing golf culture.

Course Highlights

Designed as a parkland-style course, Slammer & Squire balances open fairways with modest water hazards and bunkering. The course’s proximity to the World Golf Hall of Fame adds a subtle historical backdrop without influencing play. Several holes test approach shot accuracy with well-protected greens, while the wide fairways provide space for creative shot-making and game management.

Could be in better shape, although I hear they have had a lot of rain and cold weather to go with it (it’s not like Florida does not get a lot of rain in the summer). Shame the World Golf Hall of Fame is defunct and must have an impact on attendance of the golf courses. The guy in the pro shop had about as much personality as a brown paper bag. Overall : not worth the money.

Played here on 6/21. Came in from out of town and was tentative after some negative reviews. The course was in great shape, but the greens were a little fuzzy for my taste. A welcome greeting and a ride to the range where my clubs awaited. Marshall came around often with cold water and pace of play was fine at 4 hours. I would come back next time I was in town.

This an awesome golf course. First time I have played it and it didn’t disappoint. Fairways are in great shape and very playable. The greens putted very true. They did apologize for a couple of them not being completely grown in yet, however I didn’t feel as if that was necessary . Great experience, also my wife got to come along and we had a blast. Thank you for the great golf course.

Course has gone downhill. Was excited for my daughter to play here but did not live up to my previous visits. Greens were in horrible shape.

Pretty mid. Disappointing. While playing this course one word repeatedly came to mind. Unremarkable. It’s not BAD, but for $175 in February it’s a rip off. This is a $75 course tops. I guess cause they throw in a couple bottles of water and loan you a bath towel it’s “premium” Bathrooms are dirty. No GPS in the cart. For the most part the staff was nice. Whatever, I’m on vacation. I won’t be back. (I didn’t see any snakes or gators.) I recommend Cypress Knoll.
