Whispering Pines Golf Course

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USAMyrtle Beach Area

Whispering Pines Golf Course provides an inviting 18-hole layout in Myrtle Beach, blending straightforward design with steady playability. Its coastal setting and welcoming atmosphere make it a solid choice for golfers seeking an affordable and enjoyable round near the city.

Course Overview

Whispering Pines Golf Course offers an approachable yet engaging golf experience in the heart of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This 18-hole public course carries a history as a former military course, now transformed into a straightforward layout that invites players at all levels to test their skills without overwhelming complexity. The design favors playability, featuring gentle fairways with subtle undulations, while pockets of sand traps and water hazards add strategic interest without demanding perfection off the tee.

The course weaves through a primarily flat landscape, framed by mature pines and open stretches that allow breeze to influence shot-making. These elements provide a refreshing coastal atmosphere, with several holes encouraging touch shots and thoughtful club selection rather than brute force. The greens maintain a consistent pace, and while some tee boxes and bunker areas show wear from seasonal conditions or weather, the overall playing surface remains reliable and enjoyable throughout the year.

Whispering Pines appeals especially to beginners and mid-handicap players seeking a relaxed round near the bustling Myrtle Beach area. The course pace is friendly to walkers, with well-maintained paths and accessible walking routes, although golfers should remain vigilant for occasional soft or waterlogged spots after heavy rains. On blustery days, the interplay of wind across open holes can sharpen the challenge, rewarding those who manage their tempo carefully.

Amenities complement the straightforward nature of the course, including a modest clubhouse offering basic concessions. While not a lavish resort experience, Whispering Pines succeeds as a welcoming venue for those looking to enjoy Myrtle Beach golf without premium pricing or extensive formality. Its convenient location just off Harrelson Boulevard makes it an ideal warm-up for travelers arriving early or a casual round for locals seeking steady conditions and friendly service.

With friendly staff and a tangible sense of community, Whispering Pines Golf Course stands as a solid choice for golfers who value an accessible layout in a classic Southern golf environment. Whether aiming to sharpen fundamentals or simply enjoy a pleasant day outdoors, this course delivers practical enjoyment coupled with the easy charm of coastal South Carolina.

Course Highlights

Originally a military course, Whispering Pines retains a no-frills, approachable layout marked by pines lining several fairways and open holes that invite strategic play. The par-3 17th hole contrasts with its proximity to the adjacent airport, introducing unique visual elements to the round. Consistent greens and a coastal breeze shape shot-making across the course, offering a breezy yet tolerable test for mid-level golfers and beginners.

Greens were in good shape and consistent on each hole. Just one green had a patchwork quilt which they appeared to be trying to fix. Course was challenging enough. Tee boxes were in rough shape but you expect that at this time of year. Staff were very friendly. I accidentally stood on a fire ant nest on hole 18 in the rough, do not recommend.

Course is a great place to start your Myrtle Beach golfing vacation. You can practically walk to the first tee after collecting your clubs from baggage. Fly in early and play a round before check-in! Played in early January and course was is good condition. Rough was dormant but is to be expected for this time of year. Fairways, greens and tee boxes were all in great condition considering time of year. All the staff were friendly, green staff all said hello and asked how we were doing as we played and pro shop staff even remembered my name after I went back in after the round.

I don't normally leave reviews but in this case I feel obligated. On vacation with my wife and inlaws. I am a 6 handicap my father in law is a 3. We have played courses all over the world. This course is by far the worst course I have ever played. It is totally dried out, tee to green. The greens are not regulation. They are so dried out i hit a par 5 in 2 shots and then 9 putted for an 11. Up hill put 8 feet rolled back 6 times. Lol, I shot one past the hole trying to drop it on the come back and then it rolled back 20 feet. SAVE YOUR MONEY! I shot a 97.I haven't shot over 90 since the 90's lol. Getting off my soap box but I feel like we got taken advantage of. I have played the course several times in years past but man they have let it go downhill. The starters claimed no rain.... invest in some sprinklers! .

They were getting ready to shut down and renovate the course for 3 months so a lot of care wasn't being done. The greens were terrible but they didn't discount the fee. The people that worked there were very friendly and we made the best of the situation. I'm sure it will be better when they get back to normal.

Killing time waiting for some buddies flying in, we played 18 at WP. Literally just across the street. 17th hole par 3, you could drive a ball in the airport parking lot. Understand it used to ba an old Military course and now owned by the city. It's nothing fancy. Pretty straight forward course, was in pretty good shape. $44 can't be beat. Had a tropical storm day before, so a lot of the sand traps look like little ponds. They have a decent clubhouse. A little concession area with some hot dogs and sandwiches again, nothing to fancy to choose from. I would definitely play this course again if I was just looking to get a quick 18 in and didn't want to spend a lot of money.

Played this on a very windy day after heavy rain the day before, it looked like a nice course but I'll definitely have to play it under better weather

The layout is nice. But the greens are infested with Po Annua. Too bad, because the greens used to be wonderful.
