Poppy Hills Golf Course

Pebble Beach, California, USAMonterey Peninsula

Poppy Hills Golf Course presents an 18-hole parkland layout set amid the towering pines of Pebble Beach. Known for its lush fairways, subtly contoured greens, and calm forest environment, it offers a precise and strategic round for golfers of varying skill levels.

Course Overview

Poppy Hills Golf Course, located within the scenic bounds of Pebble Beach, California, offers an 18-hole experience that blends forested tranquility with strategic golfing challenges. Unlike many courses along the Monterey Peninsula, this inland layout frames its fairways and greens amid towering pines and rolling contours instead of ocean vistas, providing a focused test of shot-making in a serene setting.

Designed to suit a range of abilities, Poppy Hills features a course that rewards thoughtful play over sheer power. Its parkland style offers lush, well-maintained fairways bordered by native ferns and old-growth trees, which guide golfers along routes that demand accuracy and finesse. The subtle undulations of the greens, paired with carefully placed bunkers, bring the putting surfaces alive, encouraging players to engage their full repertoire of short-game shots.

Throughout the round, the air is often cool and shaded, giving the course a calm atmosphere that contrasts with the often windy coastal tracks nearby. This environment makes it especially appealing on warmer days, providing refreshment and a strong connection to the forest landscape. Poppy Hills challenges players to balance precision and strategy, leveraging the natural terrain rather than relying on forced heroics.

Off the course, the clubhouse offers a comfortable setting where players can relax and reflect on their round amid inviting amenities. The staff are noted for their attentiveness, contributing to an overall welcoming environment despite the course being part of a public facility. Walking the course is common and well-supported, with carefully maintained paths and signage assisting golfers navigating the gently hilly terrain.

For visitors planning a trip, Poppy Hills serves as a rewarding stop for both passionate and casual golfers looking to experience a championship-level course with a distinct forested character. Its location within the Monterey Peninsula provides proximity to other renowned golf destinations, making it a compelling addition to any itinerary focused on the California golf experience.

This is a top class course in California. Unfortunately we got rained out only got truly 7 holes in before the rain soaked the course, but you can’t blame the course for the weather. This place was perfectly manicured and a fun “forest” style course on the Monterey peninsula. I look forward to coming back for another visit when the weather is more cooperative.

Challenging course with excellent conditions, definitely one of the most well kept courses I’ve ever played. However, we had an odd/uncomfortable interaction with the woman working the halfway house. The food/drink menu has no prices listed, and when I asked how much one of the sandwiches cost she replied “If you have to ask you can’t afford it”……. I then gave her a look of shock/awkwardness when I realized she wasn’t joking. Then she replies with “No one around here cares or asks how much things cost” then shrugs as if it was a ridiculous question for me to even ask…. Lady it’s a sandwich! Pretty distasteful and disrespectful comment to make to a patron trying to enjoy their day, especially to a person of color. Sad that I probably wouldn’t return just based on that interaction. Do better please.

The course condition and the course layout are both fantastic. I really had problems reading the greens until I started using my feet more to read them. Though it is in Pebble Beach, there are no ocean views. But it is a very beautiful inland course.

I recently had the pleasure of playing at Poppy Hills Golf Course, and I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! The course layout is stunning, with beautiful views and challenging holes that kept me engaged throughout my round. The greens were in excellent condition, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. One of the highlights was the natural beauty surrounding the course, including the majestic trees and rolling hills. The clubhouse is also well-equipped, offering a cozy atmosphere to unwind after a game. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a beginner, Poppy Hills is a must-visit. I can't wait to return for another round!

Poppy, you are tough enough in ideal weather, but the pea soup fog was on another level of difficulty. Beautiful as always, I’ll be back.

What an absolute gem! Ive always heard good things but this was something special. I haven't had chills on a golf course like this since Bandon. The course set up and conditions were perfect. Love the little tee markers, such a nice touch. No excuse to not come if you're and NCGA members, but its worth the price and the drive (not local). Check the yardage before selecting the tee box for yourself.

Just being able to play a proper course in the Pebble Beach area is 100 percent satisfying. It is said that this course was used for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in the past. Morning tee times are expensive at over $300, but in the summer, if you make a tee time after 3 p.m., you can play 18 holes for around $140, including a cart. That's because the play speed is fast. The fairways are incredibly soft, and the greens are also very well maintained. However, there are no holes with ocean views.
