City of Charleston Municipal Golf Course

Charleston, South Carolina, USALowcountry South Carolina

City of Charleston Municipal Golf Course challenges golfers with firm fairways and undulating, fast greens along a scenic coastal layout. This public 18-hole course demands precision and strategy, rewarding players who prepare for its elevated, tricky greens and stunning bay views.

Course Overview

City of Charleston Municipal Golf Course offers a demanding yet rewarding 18-hole layout, carving out a distinctive golfing experience along Charleston’s coastal fringe. As a public course, it embraces a wide spectrum of players, but its design clearly favors those looking for a genuine test of shot-making and strategy. The recently renovated course features firm, fast fairways and particularly undulating greens that require pinpoint irons and careful reads. Elevated green complexes and subtle run-offs challenge even seasoned players, turning approach shots into exercises in precision.

Located at 2110 Maybank Hwy, the course reveals a varied landscape where water hazards punctuate several holes, and the back nine opens to sweeping views of the bay. These vistas bring an air of calm and expansive beauty, contrasting the intensity of the front nine’s tighter, more compact holes. The combination of fast surfaces and quick conditions demands a controlled tempo and savvy club selection throughout the round.

The course’s playability rewards preparation and patience. Booking tee times well in advance is essential, especially given its popularity among local golfers. Pace of play can be a factor during peak hours, so early morning tee times are recommended for those seeking a more dependable rhythm. Walking the course is encouraged, with sturdy footwear advised due to firm ground conditions.

Amenities include a well-appointed clubhouse that serves as a gathering spot for members and guests, offering refreshments and a friendly atmosphere. While no elaborate resort features define the venue, its straightforward layout and maintenance highlight its purpose: challenging municipal golf for players willing to engage with a track that pushes precision and patience.

For golfers accustomed to more forgiving courses, this layout demands respect and careful strategy. Those who embrace its challenges will find the course’s trickier greens and coastal setting provide memorable moments well beyond the scorecard. City of Charleston Municipal stands as a testament to strong municipal golf—accessible yet fiercely competitive, straightforward yet full of subtle tests.

Planning your visit means preparing to face firm fairways and fast greens while enjoying some of the best bay views the area offers. Early reservations, solid putting skills, and a readiness to engage with a course that rewards thoughtful play will ensure a round to remember.

Course Highlights

The course features challenging elevated green complexes and well-positioned water hazards that test control and course management. Renovations in recent years have sharpened the course’s edges, improving drainage and enhancing the playing conditions to make it one of the region’s premier municipal layouts.

The condition of the course is certainly municipal standard. The fairways and greens are hard packed to try to deal with the amount of volume play they have I found the back line having some beautiful architectural holes on some nice settings. The reason for the three stars is the volume of play that they permit to happen here. We had reserved the earliest available teatime a week in advance however, we were suddenly surprised to hear about the “”blitz ahead of us where they let off 10 groups of golfers, who all clearly we’re friends with the starter. It pays to be a local retiree…

First off, I will tell you this is a very challenging golf course. But not in a bad way. They completely overhaul his golf course a few years ago elevator some greens change greens to where they had a lot of undulations and heels and valleys. Course is in great shape they cleaned up waste areas that needed to be cleaned up, water areas that needed to be cleaned up, And just overall. This is a great phenomenal golf course if you want to play it you need to make teetimes a week in advance. And you need to do it earlier or you will not get a tee time, that being said this is a must play your friend in Charleston area. They have done a phenomenal job of making it a nice and challenging golf course.

By far One of the best municipal golf courses in the country after the redesign a couple years back! no doubt in my mind it's the best course for the money in the Charleston Tri-County area. that being said, for really high handicappers be warned, this is not a golf course to take lightly. The green complexes are very tricky. everything runs off. the greens are so fast. considering some of the greens are elevated and very undulating fall offs, you may think you put it on and then it runs off 30 ft. humbling to say the least ! definitely reminds me of a Seth Raynor golf course . The front nine is daunting the back nine. I find to be a lot easier and also more aesthetically appealing, especially when the Sun goes down. beautiful sunsets. can't rave enough about this course other than the challenge

Played the course while visiting some friends. Awesome. Kind of an old school vibe. Very friendly staff. The carts are great they have up to date gps with touch screens and even a radio! The little bar / diner was good but food takes a while so be prepared. Overall great course. Highly recommend and a good value.

Currently sitting on the driving range in a metal chair in the middle of the day with bright blue skies, but am not allowed to hit because supposedly there is lightning somewhere in the state of South Carolina. I have no idea why it isn’t a “play at your own risk” situation considering this is a public municipal golf course and there isn’t a cloud in sight? But this is the norm here pretty much every day during the summer. Good stuff Charleston.

The greens are beautifully impossible to putt. Many times you must play your irons to specific locations on the green. Scratch golfers who are used to simply hitting the green and two putting, wont play well here. The coolest Muni this side of the Mississippi…

Extremely disappointed with the behavior of the female marshal on duty during our round. She was rude, confrontational, and unprofessional from the start—at one point even swearing at us and accusing us of lying without any justification. Her tone and attitude completely soured what should have been an enjoyable day of golf. I’ve never experienced anything like this at any course. Management should seriously address how guests are treated if they care about repeat business.

Solid course. Awesome bay views on the back nine. Tee shots are a decent challenge…low cut and firm fast fairways. The challenge is the approach and around the greens. These were some of the firmest fastest greens I’ve ever played on, and super undulated too! Give yourself 4&1/2 to 5hr for a round. This place gets very busy and lots of play
