Woodley Lakes Golf Course

Van Nuys, California, USALos Angeles Metro

Woodley Lakes Golf Course in Van Nuys offers an approachable, 18-hole public layout with wide fairways and well-maintained greens. Set within an urban park environment, it balances playability and subtle strategic elements, making it suitable for golfers of all skill levels.

Course Overview

Woodley Lakes Golf Course offers an inviting, 18-hole public layout set within the Sepulveda Dam Basin of Van Nuys, California. Its wide, flat terrain provides an approachable golfing experience that suits a broad range of skill levels. The course’s open and expansive fairways leave plenty of room for wayward shots, making it an excellent venue for players looking to build confidence or improve their game without the pressure of narrow landing areas. The greens are well maintained, presenting a subtle challenge with their moderate speed and undulating surfaces that require focused putting.

The course’s setting within a large urban park adds an element of quiet natural scenery, punctuated by nearby park facilities that contribute to an accessible and relaxed atmosphere. While the flat layout lacks dramatic elevation changes, it invites strategic play, particularly around the well-guarded greens with bunkers that test approach shot accuracy. These features allow experienced golfers to plot their way around carefully while still accommodating those seeking a more forgiving round.

Woodley Lakes also includes practical amenities, such as a driving range with natural grass, which encourages solid swing practice under the Southern California sun. Although uncovered, the range offers ample space to loosen up before hitting the course. Additional short game areas provide opportunities for sharpening pitches and chips, adding value for dedicated players honing specific shots.

The clubhouse features comfortable facilities, including food options ideal for refueling either before or after a round. While some restrooms have been subject to temporary closures, overall the club maintains a friendly and welcoming environment.

One notable aspect of Woodley Lakes is its susceptibility to flooding during heavy rains due to its location within a flood control basin. However, this also aids the lushness of the turf during drier periods, creating consistently green fairways.

For golfers seeking accessible, well-kept public golf away from the hustle of Southern California’s busier courses, Woodley Lakes provides a balanced test of golf that blends playability with subtle strategic demands. Whether you are aiming for a personal best or a casual round with friends, its wide-open spaces and reliable conditions make it a practical choice for a rewarding day on the greens.

Course Highlights

Wide, forgiving fairways within a unique flood control basin setting, well-kept greens presenting moderate challenges, extensive natural grass driving range, and proximity to city park amenities support a versatile golfing experience that mixes practice and play.

The course you may break your best score. This course is pretty flat & wide. Not maintained rough area, but don't worry about getting in rough. Huge fairway on every hole. greens are maintained very well. 4 and half hrs for 18 holes with 60 bucks included cart.

This course has the air of a countey club in some ways. Very nice course with good greens and fairways. Pace of play is a concern due to so many beginners that cannot give up on their OB balls and just drop a new one and keep on playing, or intermediate golfers playing from the blacks and driving it 180 yards. So frustrating. Other than pace of play, this is a truly awesome course!

I like playing this course. It’s friendly for the golfer who sprays it all over the place. You can go low out there and boost your confidence. It has a driving range with real grass but no cover. You can bake in the sun while you beat balls. There’s some reasonably nice short game practice areas. The 19th hole is great. I think some people go there just for that.

Five Stars – Great Day at Woodley Lakes Golf Course! Had an amazing time golfing at Woodley Lakes Golf Course! The course was in great shape—beautiful layout and a fun challenge from start to finish. The staff was excellent across the board. We had lunch inside before our round and were so hungry we ended up grabbing food again on the course. Huge shoutout to Natalie, the cart girl—we ran into her twice and she was fantastic both times. Super friendly, professional, and brought great energy. She really added to the experience. It looked like they might’ve been a little short-staffed, but you’d never know it. The whole team was working hard and kept things running smoothly. Looking forward to coming back!

Fun golf course! Wide, on the mediumush long distance course. Occasional dirt patches, but overall well maintained. Greens are def on the slower side, but are very well maintained, and are difficult to read. Jennifer in the Pro Shop was very helpful and kind.

A nice out-of-the-way golf course a bit off the beaten path of the other local courses within a block of the 101 Freeway. It’s a fairly good golf course and driving range that doesn’t seem so busy on weekdays though the weekends can be more crowded. I love the wide open space with local park facilities within walking distance. The golf club house is very nice with its facilities, though when I went, the restrooms were closed. The downside is, as part of the Sepulveda Dam flood control basin it’s prone to flooding with significant rainfall. On the upside, a little flooding helps the greenery thrive, thus a beautiful area with the saturated soil!
