Bijou Municipal Golf Course

South Lake Tahoe, California, USALake Tahoe Region

Bijou Municipal Golf Course offers a scenic and approachable 9-hole layout in South Lake Tahoe. Combining mountain views with a friendly, walk-only environment, it welcomes beginners and families seeking a relaxed yet skillful round.

Course Overview

Bijou Municipal Golf Course offers a refreshing introduction to the game amid the striking natural beauty of South Lake Tahoe. This approachable 9-hole layout blends practical design with the region’s alpine charm, making it a welcomed stop for beginners, families, and those looking for a relaxed round with panoramic mountain views. The course’s setting places players in close harmony with the surrounding Sierra Nevada, where pines frame narrow fairways and the distant peaks provide a dramatic backdrop that remains constant through every hole.

While compact, the course delivers a variety of challenges that belie its size. Fairways require focus and precision, with thick rough largely on the left side and tree lines pressing from the right. Several holes reward accurate drives and strategic placement, making it an engaging test for players still refining their skills. The greens, though a mix of natural grasses and less manicured surfaces, demand a subtle touch and add an element of unpredictability to approach shots. This rustic character enhances the course’s authentic, community-driven atmosphere.

Available exclusively to walking players, Bijou encourages a connection with the land and an enjoyable pace that suits players of all ages and skill levels. Golfers visiting with rented clubs or newcomers to the sport will find the course’s moderate yardage well-suited for learning and pace of play. On quieter days, the opportunity to spot local wildlife such as coyotes adds an uncommon flavor to the experience.

Although amenities are modest compared to larger venues, the friendly staff and well-maintained grounds support a welcoming environment. Situated just minutes from downtown South Lake Tahoe, Bijou Municipal combines affordability with scenic character, providing a memorable way to engage with golf without the pressure of more extensive championship layouts. For visitors wanting to sharpen fundamentals or enjoy a leisurely round amid breathtaking mountain surroundings, Bijou presents a straightforward, honest golf experience that invites multiple returns.

Course Highlights

Bijou’s 9-hole course stands out for its alpine setting beneath the towering Sierra Nevadas, narrow tree-lined fairways, and greens featuring natural turf textures. Its approachable length and walk-only policy foster a relaxed pace, while local wildlife sightings add a unique element uncommon at many public municipal venues.

Great course for beginners. The tee boxes and greens need some work but the low cost makes up for it. The course is narrow so bring extra balls, because it is very difficult to find them if they stray a bit.

Great little par 3 golf course to walk on and practice your iron shots. There are 1-2 longer par 4 (300+ yd). If you hit your ball in the tall grass, good luck finding it. Greens are slow due overgrown weeds and crab grass . Staff are friendly. Great views and play for the price point. Would walk again.

GREAT course for kids transitioning fun par 3 to a full course. Also really affordable option if you're on vacation, didn't bring clubs, and just want a quick fun round.

Scenic 9-hole course, great for beginners, with couple of the holes quite challenging. Good chance of seeing coyotes and bears :)

Love this course. I have played a bunch of times over the last 20 years. It's a great little 9 hole course for beginners to get their feet wet in the game, as well more experienced players that just want to go out, have fun & play 9 holes for a reasonable price. The employees are friendly, the course is usually in good shape & you can't beat the views!

Affordable pretty good muni golf course. Fairways are good, stay straight high rough on the left when starting out, trees on the right. Greens are not greens. Mixed sparse grass, weeds & other growth. But a great course to play with Heavenly's mountains as your backdrop. Relaxing if the pace of play is good, otherwise can be frustrating. Will be back next summer. Great friendly staff.
