Mohonk Golf Course

New Paltz, New York, USAHudson Valley

Mohonk Golf Course in New Paltz offers a historic 9-hole mountain layout defined by steep elevation changes and blind tee shots. Its well-maintained roots-style design challenges golfers with fast greens and rugged terrain, delivering a rewarding round for those seeking a thoughtful and physical test of golf.

Course Overview

Mohonk Golf Course presents a distinctive challenge set against the rugged backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge in New Paltz, New York. This 9-hole mountain layout, established in 1897, offers an experience that blends historical golfing roots with natural terrain demands. The course’s defining feature is its dramatic elevation changes, forcing players to carefully consider club selection and trajectory on nearly every shot. Blind tee shots test a golfer’s imagination and course management, while the undulating fairways demand precision and patience.

The landscape plays a quiet but commanding role here. While water hazards and bunkers remain limited, the relentless hills and strategic green placements are enough to shape an enthralling round. Greens typically run quick and are often positioned with challenging pin locations, rewarding those who can navigate slope and speed with thoughtful approach shots. A red-tailed hawk soaring above the 8th fairway captures one of many subtle moments of natural beauty that enhance the round.

Mohonk invites players who appreciate a course that requires both mental and physical agility. It leans toward golfers comfortable with walking, as the elevation shifts provide an engaging workout that complements the game, not overwhelms it. The terrain can make for a difficult day for newcomers, but the variety and challenge help develop a sharper short and long game.

The setting caters to those seeking a quiet, reflective golf experience far from the bustle of large resort courses. The staff's helpfulness and the welcoming pro shop add to a sense of community that enriches the day. Twilight rates offer exceptional value, making Mohonk accessible to a broad audience intent on embracing golf in a pure, unadorned form.

Visitors are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes capable of handling uphill and downhill walking, and to allow extra time for reading the trickier greens. Each visit reveals new nuances, making Mohonk Golf Course a must-visit for players drawn to mountain golf’s authentic demands and rewards.

Course Highlights

Mohonk’s original 1897 design preserves a rugged mountain character with blind tee shots and complex elevation shifts. Fast greens and limited hazards emphasize shot placement over obstacle navigation. The course’s natural setting atop the Shawangunk Ridge provides peaceful woodland views and wildlife encounters, such as the occasional red-tailed hawk soaring overhead.

Beautifully maintained course that is perfect for walking. While I just finished shooting my worst round in recent memory, I can't recall a more relaxing or rewarding round. A red tailed hawk flying across the 8th fairway made the day complete. There is not a publicly accessible course in the area that offers such a great experience at such a fair price.

This is a beautiful mountain course with incredible value. Lots of blind tee shots and extreme elevation undulations. The greens were in very good condition and quite fast. A few of the pins were in extremely difficult spots. It’s a must play if you’re in the area!

This is a great golf course. It was the hardest course I've ever played, but I'm pretty new to golf. Many flags are blind and it's very hilly. The 1st hole is a very hard par 3. It's easy to lose balls if you don't pay close attention to where they land. Not many obstacles (water or bunkers), but you still have to hit it fairly straight. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Gonna practice more and come back next season!
