Newton Commonwealth Golf Course

Newton, Massachusetts, USAGreater Boston

Newton Commonwealth Golf Course blends classic Donald Ross design with a parkland layout that rewards precision over power. Its approachable yet strategic 18 holes offer a satisfying test for golfers of all levels just outside Boston.

Course Overview

Newton Commonwealth Golf Course offers a compelling blend of classic architecture and approachable challenge just outside Boston. This 18-hole public course, designed by the legendary Donald Ross, emphasizes thoughtful shot-making over sheer length. With a total yardage measuring just over 6,000 yards and a par of 70, it favors precision, especially in navigating its subtly sloped fairways and strategic green complexes.

Set within a residential neighborhood, the course's layout presents a traditional parkland style with mature trees lining many holes. While the routing is compact, the variety of elevation changes and occasional blind tee shots demand a degree of creativity from the player. Wind often plays a subtle but influential role, adding a layer of complexity to course management.

The greens are well maintained and generally firm and fast, a characteristic that rewards an accurate approach and a well-tuned short game. Several holes require careful club selection, particularly on the front nine where the fairways slope away, testing directional control. Hole 14, often referred to by locals as the “road hole,” stands out for its blend of risk and reward, inviting a calculated aggression off the tee.

Newton Commonwealth is friendly to golfers of all skill levels. Beginners will find the layout manageable without punitive length, while low handicappers can enjoy the strategic demands placed on every shot. While carts are available by request, walking remains the preferred option to fully experience the nuances of the course and its setting. The clubhouse is modest but welcoming, providing essentials and a chance to relax after the round.

Service at the course has earned praise for attentiveness and integrity, highlighted by the proactive management in assisting guests beyond golf needs. Planning a visit here means expecting a course that challenges your focus and shot execution, without overwhelming distance or complexity.

For golfers seeking a historically rooted yet player-friendly experience near Boston, Newton Commonwealth delivers with honest design, consistent conditions, and courteous staff that elevate each round.

I believe this is a solid golf course and is good bang for your buck. Definitely not the longest golf course out there, but it challenges you with the sloped fairways, forcing you to adjust. Some of the holes on the front 9 have blind tee-offs, so if you're not comfortable shot shaping as needed, I recommend playing a shorter club. The greens play on the faster side and are overall pretty well maintained. So far, the best golf course near the Boston area.

I haven't played here, but the Kanga Roo Golf Boys on YouTube made me put this on my list to visit if I'm ever in the area.

This is a well-maintained public course designed by Donald Ross that my friends and I frequent. Separately, on a windy day, a tree branch fell on our parked car and cracked our windshield. Albie, the course manager, was incredibly responsive and helpful, and immediately followed up with his insurance and made sure we had a replacement free of charge within a week. That's not a level of service that even some private courses provide, and demonstrated the integrity and customer service of the staff on-site. I would recommend visiting this course to anyone, locals or visitors to Boston!

Im all for trying to make a shorter course like this difficult but I think most will agree this pin is not within reason… not the worst course ever, certainly not the best

Beautiful course. Fairways and greens were in excellent condition. Greens were pure and played fast. Challenging and fun round! #14 ‘road hole’ was my favorite!

Nice little municipal course and a residential area, can't give it five stars. Greens were being worked on at the time so they were kind of a little difficult. Short course cool layout

Very interesting slop, quite large course, we were however a bit confused about where to find the next hole though.
