Dunes Golf and Beach Club

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, USAGrand Strand

Dunes Golf and Beach Club offers a traditional Robert White-designed layout where coastal breezes and strategic bunkering shape a challenging yet approachable 18-hole championship experience. Distinguished by firm bentgrass greens and a tasteful mix of ocean-adjacent terrain, this private club tests precision and creativity without overwhelming complexity.

Course Overview

Located along the Atlantic coastline in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Dunes Golf and Beach Club offers a classic championship golf experience defined by thoughtful design and coastal character. This 18-hole, private course demands precise shot-making while rewarding players who appreciate strategic risk-reward opportunities. The layout reflects the traditional architectural style of Robert White, presenting wide fairways framed by deep bunkers that challenge accuracy from tee to green.

The course’s setting is an engaging mixture of gently rolling terrain and seaside influences, with several holes teasing the ocean breeze. While not a links course in the purest sense, the wind plays a subtle yet significant role, often testing a golfer’s control and tempo. Tall pines and stands of live oaks punctuate the fairways throughout, providing a mix of shade and tight driving corridors that force players to choose their lines carefully.

Dunes Golf and Beach Club is renowned for its reliable conditioning, especially on greens that offer a firm but fair putting surface. The bentgrass greens hold subtle breaks, encouraging thoughtful reads rather than aggressive putting, making the course an enjoyable test for golfers of varying skill levels. Though the front nine opens with a relatively calm tempo, the back nine builds steadily in challenge, featuring holes that demand creativity and precision under pressure.

The club’s amenities complement the golf experience, including a well-appointed clubhouse and attentive staff who prioritize member comfort and service. The walking-friendly property allows players to engage with the course intimately, though its size and occasional undulation suggest comfortable footwear will enhance the round.

For golfers who value a traditional championship layout that embraces coastal elements without overwhelming complexity, Dunes Golf and Beach Club presents an appealing destination. Those preparing to visit should anticipate variable coastal winds and be ready to adjust strategy accordingly. The course’s blend of accessible design with subtle intricacies invites repeated rounds to fully appreciate its nuances.

It lives up to its reputation. Nice RTJ design. Lots of deep bunkering. Sticky, rye grass rough off the fairways and greens. Greens were dormant bermuda (I think). Very true and fast.

To be honest, the front nine (outward nine) was quite underwhelming. At times, I felt more like a birdwatcher than a golfer — the amount of bird activity was distracting and broke the flow of the round. The routing and visual intrigue simply didn't meet the expectations one might have for a course of this reputation. However, everything changed starting from the 13th hole. The inward stretch builds in character and challenge, and from that point on, the course began to show its true personality. There's a noticeable shift in design intent and landscape engagement, particularly on the finishing holes. I'd like to return for a second visit — especially when the greens are in top condition. I have a feeling the course will leave a stronger impression under ideal playing circumstances.

Nice course overall, fun track to play. Very friendly pro shop staff and the ladies in the clubhouse bar were great too. Fairways in great shape, but greens had some bare spots here and there. Also, looked like they had been punched in recent weeks, but almost recovered fully, just not quite. The 1st cut off the fairways was patchy in many areas as well with nothing but sand, which was odd given the niceness of the fairways. All in all an enjoyable round, but I dont think it's a $200 type of round $$$ wise. Several other very nice courses in the area with great scenery for far cheaper.

Amazing golf course and staff. They know how to treat people and you’ll notice as soon as you pull up to bag drop. The course was in great shape and the greens rolled true and were fast which is what I truly prefer. I’ve played at tons of different courses and this is one of my favorites. First time in Myrtle Beach but already looking forward to coming back to play here again!

Course was in fantastic condition. Greens were lightning fast, which is great. Would have rated 4.5 stars because couldn't take carts in the fairway due to over-seeding, which wasn't really a problem except it slowed down our play and was tough on some of our "senior" players, adding a bit of walking. A few members were not very friendly on the course (probably because of the aforementioned slow down in play). Still a great course I would highly recommend playing.
