Desert Canyon Golf Resort

Orondo, Washington, USAEastern Washington

Desert Canyon Golf Resort offers an engaging 18-hole layout that blends mountain influences with desert terrain, providing an absorbing challenge with panoramic views and well-placed hazards. Ideal for players seeking varied elevation and strategic play within eastern Washington’s striking landscape.

Course Overview

Desert Canyon Golf Resort offers an 18-hole experience that captures the rugged spirit of eastern Washington’s landscape while delivering a course that challenges and rewards players across skill levels. Set against the backdrop of dramatic desert terrain and basalt cliffs, this public course blends mountain golf elements with sweeping views and variable elevation changes that affect club selection and shot strategy throughout the round.

The layout demands thoughtful navigation of expansive fairways bordered by sagebrush and native grasses, creating natural hazards that encourage precision off the tee. Greens often frame the surrounding desert floor, with contours that subtly test putting touch. The course’s diversity includes holes featuring separate greens for different tee boxes, providing multiple angles that keep the game fresh and engaging. Golfers will encounter uphill approaches and downhill drives that lend dynamism to every swing, while the winds—often a steady companion—play a role in shot decisions, adding a layer of tactical complexity.

Playability at Desert Canyon leans toward intermediate to advanced players but remains accessible enough for enthusiastic amateurs seeking to hone their skills on a varied terrain. The length of the course, combined with elevation shifts and strategically placed bunkers, rewards accuracy and course management. While the greens are generally in good condition, some have reported occasional surface bumpiness that challenges speed control.

Beyond the fairways, Desert Canyon extends its appeal with an 18-hole putting course, inviting players to refine their short game or enjoy casual practice in a scenic, relaxed environment. Accommodations include a four-bedroom casita, ideal for groups seeking an immersive golf weekend, although the lodging offers a comfortable, practical stay rather than luxury indulgence. Amenities such as the restaurant and beverage cart have experienced interruptions, so players should plan accordingly and bring adequate hydration for warmer days.

Cart paths traverse hilly sections, making a cart advisable given the course’s rugged nature and distances between holes. GPS-enabled carts help with yardage and course navigation, though some vehicles show signs of wear. Overall, Desert Canyon provides an authentic, challenging desert golf experience that balances natural beauty with thoughtful design, appealing to those ready to engage with its landscape and nuances.

Course Highlights

The course showcases dramatic elevation changes with holes carved into desert and basalt formations, including two unique holes with separate greens that vary approach angles. The addition of an 18-hole putting course offers players an enjoyable way to warm up or unwind. While the course is visually striking, practical challenges like firm greens and mountain winds require thoughtful club selection.

Restaurant closed, no beverage cart, and no starter. That being said, it's a great golf course!

We stayed at the 4-bedroom casita and played the course on a stay and play package. The rooms were well setup for 4 individuals with two sets of bathrooms, but it is definitely not a luxury resort. Did appreciate we had a view of hole #3. The outdoor pool is tiny but we didn’t use it. As for the course, would play it again. Some beautiful views and memorable holes with tricky layout including two holes with separate greens for different tees. Condition is decent but greens were bumpy. Had to ride a cart as the distance between holes were large at some points and quite hilly.

This is my favorite course in eastern Washington. Great layout and it’s always in wonderful shape…. And the price is right. We played two rounds at Gamble Sands which were great but it cost $275 a round. Came to Desert Canyon and played a round for $160…not cheap but just a great track. The carts are getting old and tired but the gps systems worked and the greens were great. I would actually give it four and a half stars it’s just the infrastructure issues that keeps them from getting 5 stars!! Also have a really fun 18 hole putting course as well!

We played the course as 3 groups. We teed off at 11:15am, 45 min behind the group in front of us. Pro shop said to play slow. We played slow, caught up with the group in front of us at hole 9. Proceeded to have a 6 hour round for a $173 round. 2 groups in front of us quit, ridiculous. No marshall, can’t call the pro shop. It was 95F and the water jugs around the course were empty. What are you paying for? I play 80 rounds a year around the country and this was horrible. Doubt we’ll come back.

This was a beautiful golf course and we had a lot of fun. But the only restaurant on site was closed at 8PM. We had to drive 10 minutes to a gas station to get frozen pizza that we had to cook in our room! Here it’s summer and the sun doesn’t even set until 9:30pm and no food! Staff were friendly and we had a big breakfast burrito and breakfast croissant.
