Course Overview

Located in Williamsburg, Virginia, Deer Cove Golf Course offers a straightforward, welcoming environment for those looking to sharpen their skills or enjoy a casual round. This 9-hole public course is designed to provide an accessible experience without sacrificing the fundamental pleasures of the game. Set on gently rolling terrain that recalls classic parkland layouts, the course presents a modest yet thoughtfully arranged sequence of holes, ideal for beginners and seasoned players seeking a quicker round.

The landscape is simple and functional, with fairways framed by open fields and occasional clusters of trees that offer subtle strategic challenges. This setting allows the natural elements, including light breezes and varying sunlight angles throughout the day, to play a quiet role in influencing shot selection and club choices. Deer Cove’s shorter length and manageable par structure make it particularly approachable, encouraging smooth pace of play and focusing on precision rather than brute strength.

Beyond the course itself, Deer Cove includes essential facilities such as a putting green and a driving range, providing warm-up and practice opportunities for golfers preparing to take on the course. The club’s military-friendly atmosphere lends a sense of community for veterans and active personnel, reinforced by welcoming staff who contribute to a relaxed yet respectful environment.

Players should note that the course uses gas-powered carts, which are available but tend to be in varied condition, so planning for comfortable footwear is advisable for those who prefer walking. While no on-site food service is available, the proximity to Williamsburg’s amenities ensures easy access to dining options before or after play.

Deer Cove is not a sprawling resort complex or a high-end private club, but its honest design and service-minded approach offer a rewarding golf experience for those who value straightforward fun and practice-focused rounds. Whether you’re working on your short game or looking for a low-key outing, this course embodies a practical and approachable spirit that fits well within the Williamsburg area’s golfing community.

Course Highlights

Deer Cove stands out for its functional layout that emphasizes shot-making and course management. While short, its holes feature subtle elevation changes and green complexes that demand thoughtful approach shots. The driving range and putting green offer ample opportunities for warm-up and skill development. The course’s welcoming environment and military-friendly attitude bring a unique sense of camaraderie.

PLEASE READ. As reference, I'm an engineer and also run my own businesses and have never had even a single write up in 15 years of working. Gregory Lynch (the manager) terminated me from my suppose to be "non stressful" part time position at this course. He gave false statements and that I left a door unlocked that he noticed in the morning even though he never notified me until he began an investigation a week later against me, and even though no items were stolen. There were no pictures or video and the security guards told me they make sure all doors are locked each night. Only his statement was used as evidence and the hr rep Jason Oreszko told me it was manditory to sign paperwork without an attorney reviewing it first since Jason said it would be considered not cooperating on my part and further used against me. Greg has also threaten to fire me over 10 times since I began working March 2024 and made multiple comments about my age and finances which was very odd. The same day he started the investigation, I told him I would be filing an EEO case against him. He then retaliated by officially terminating me even though I had no previous infractions and was given an excellent review. What is even more odd is that two long term employees also quit around this time and after I stated I'd be filing with EEO, Gregory either voluntarily moved or was forced to move to the Fort Eustis golf course. Lastly, I've mentioned multiple safety issues to Gregory since working there. I was even injured and he told me I couldn't contact hr. He never offered me any forms to fill out for the injury or asked if I was ok and replied "we don't have the manpower to fix everything". Greg is usually gone between 12pm and 2pm each day.

Course was in nice shape. Greens are small and provide a great opportunity to work on short game and putting. Solid 9 hole course and worth a visit if you are in the area.

Course location looks nice but that's about it. Seems like they need better management. Only 9 holes, junk/broken down carts, only gas carts, odd pricing, no food, and manager was yelling at an employee who's always been nice/helped us out. Place couod be way better.

Been a member since 2021. Great home course especially for retired military and veterans and priced right with specials during the week. Course is in better shape than Eustis which I also like. A must visit if you don’t want to be rushed. Greg, the Golf Pro/ Course Manager ensures it’s maintained well. Staff is also super helpful. Also has a driving range!
