Bijou Municipal Golf Course

South Lake Tahoe, California, USAEastern Sierra Nevada

Bijou Municipal Golf Course is a scenic 9-hole public course in South Lake Tahoe, offering a balanced challenge for beginners and casual golfers alike. Set against the backdrop of the Heavenly Mountains, it combines approachable play with striking alpine views and a welcoming atmosphere.

Course Overview

Bijou Municipal Golf Course offers a welcoming and accessible golf experience on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, providing a scenic yet practical setting for both novice and casual players. This 9-hole public course may be compact but carries a distinct personality shaped by the surrounding mountains and forest that frame each hole. Its layout encourages players to focus on accuracy over power as fairways tend to be narrow, bordered by tall pines and pockets of thick rough that demand thoughtful shot placement.

The course is a well-suited stepping stone for beginners eager to grow their skills, with relatively short holes that nonetheless offer enough challenge to maintain engagement. A gentle undulation across the terrain adds a layer of strategy without overwhelming less experienced golfers. While the greens are a mix of natural grasses with some uneven patches, they provide a realistic practice ground for putting in variable conditions.

Beyond its playability, Bijou Municipal boasts stunning views of the Heavenly Mountain ski area, which serves as a majestic backdrop, especially on clear days when the alpine scenery enhances the peaceful atmosphere. Wildlife sightings, including coyotes and occasionally bears, remind visitors to stay alert and appreciate the course’s location near Tahoe’s wilderness areas.

The staff here contribute to the course’s inviting vibe, known for friendliness and helpfulness that makes each visit approachable and hassle-free. Rates are reasonable, making Bijou an attractive option for vacationers who may not have their own clubs or for locals looking for a quick, enjoyable round.

Due to its manageable length and straightforward design, walking the course is not only feasible but encouraged. Golfers should bring sturdy shoes as footing can be uneven in spots, especially around the tee areas and greens. Given the setting and course conditions, seasonal visits in late spring through early fall offer the most consistent play.

Bijou Municipal Golf Course delivers a refreshing, low-pressure environment to enjoy golf against the dramatic landscape of South Lake Tahoe. Its blend of natural beauty, challenge balanced with approachability, and friendly community feel creates a memorable stop for anyone looking to tee up by the lake.

Course Highlights

Bijou’s setting near Heavenly Mountain offers unique alpine scenery uncommon for a municipal course. The 9 holes emphasize shot precision through narrow fairways flanked by pine forests. While greens are natural and somewhat uneven, they provide a realistic putting surface. Frequent wildlife sightings add a distinct local character to the round.

Love this course. I have played a bunch of times over the last 20 years. It's a great little 9 hole course for beginners to get their feet wet in the game, as well more experienced players that just want to go out, have fun & play 9 holes for a reasonable price. The employees are friendly, the course is usually in good shape & you can't beat the views!

Scenic 9-hole course, great for beginners, with couple of the holes quite challenging. Good chance of seeing coyotes and bears :)

Great course for beginners. The tee boxes and greens need some work but the low cost makes up for it. The course is narrow so bring extra balls, because it is very difficult to find them if they stray a bit.

Affordable pretty good muni golf course. Fairways are good, stay straight high rough on the left when starting out, trees on the right. Greens are not greens. Mixed sparse grass, weeds & other growth. But a great course to play with Heavenly's mountains as your backdrop. Relaxing if the pace of play is good, otherwise can be frustrating. Will be back next summer. Great friendly staff.

GREAT course for kids transitioning fun par 3 to a full course. Also really affordable option if you're on vacation, didn't bring clubs, and just want a quick fun round.

Great little par 3 golf course to walk on and practice your iron shots. There are 1-2 longer par 4 (300+ yd). If you hit your ball in the tall grass, good luck finding it. Greens are slow due overgrown weeds and crab grass . Staff are friendly. Great views and play for the price point. Would walk again.
