Flagstone Golf Club

Cleveland, Tennessee, USAEast Tennessee

Flagstone Golf Club offers an 18-hole public layout marked by tall grasses and fast, sloping greens without the typical bunkers, presenting a strategic test that favors precision over power. Set on gently rolling land near Cleveland, Tennessee, the course invites players to enjoy a unique blend of challenge and playability with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

Course Overview

Flagstone Golf Club, located just outside Cleveland, Tennessee, offers an 18-hole layout that challenges golfers without overwhelming them. Formerly known as Chatata Valley Golf & Country Club, this public course unfolds across gently rolling terrain marked by tall grasses that frame many fairways, inviting players to hone both precision and strategy. Unlike traditional designs, Flagstone is notable for the absence of bunkers; former bunkers have softened into natural rough, creating a playing field that rewards accurate drives and thoughtful approaches while presenting a unique aesthetic rarely seen on courses in the region.

The course’s greens stand out for their firm, fast surfaces that demand careful read of subtle breaks. Elevations shift moderately throughout, adding interest to shot selection without veering into overly dramatic elevation changes. Water hazards exist sparingly, mainly as a creek skirting holes 1 and 10, but these rarely come into direct play except for the most errant tee shots. Tall grass along the fairways often becomes the primary challenge, punishing stray balls and reinforcing the need for controlled, confident ball striking.

Flagstone’s fairways and greens are maintained well, providing a consistent playing surface seasonally. While the course atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the layout offers enough complexity to engage mid- to low-handicap players who appreciate course management as much as length. Its relatively open setting provides ample sunlight and natural airflow, adding to enjoyment during warmer months without feeling exposed.

Facilities around the course are functional, though some amenities such as restrooms may show signs of wear, warranting planning ahead for comfort breaks. The clubhouse atmosphere remains casual, with staff known for their welcoming approach, particularly to visiting players. For anyone seeking a challenging but not intimidating round near Cleveland, Flagstone Golf Club combines southern charm with a quietly intriguing course design that inspires focus and rewards thoughtful play.

Course Highlights

Flagstone stands apart through its bunker-free design, relying on thick tall grasses and strategic green contours to challenge golfers. The creek along holes 1 and 10 introduces a subtle water element without being overly punitive. The course's fast, firm greens reward players who can read subtle breaks, making putting an engaging test. The layout’s blend of open vistas and tree-lined sections shapes a varied and enjoyable round. Maintenance prioritizes fairway quality and green speed, contributing to overall playability for a wide range of skill levels.

Showed up on a Monday morning to hit a bucket of balls. Walked in to the clubhouse and was greeted nicely until they realized I wasn't part of the highschool tournament happening that morning. Asked a few questions about a website or a calendar of events so I would know when the course was closed and they said that they sometimes post something on the wall and they don't bother with the interwebs. They reluctantly answered my questions about their hours and event times and seemed pretty irritated that I was there, gently ushering me out the door saying "Come back and try again another time". I'm going to say probably not. I heard there is a nice course a little further away up north. A little bit of consideration goes along way y'all.

It’s a nice course. Greens and fairways maintained pretty well. Bathrooms on the course, NOT SO MUCH. Always dirty and out of soap. Prices are fair, and hope the new owners take pride in the course (and bathrooms)!

Layout of the course was nice but challenging. Went in the Kate afternoon and even though we had a tee time. We still had to wait between holes cause everyone was on top of each other. But the greens and fairways were in good shape.

The course is now called Flagstone and the staff is very welcoming. I was visiting from out of town and the owner took the time to reach out to a female golfer to see if she was available to play with me. She was and we had a great time! The course was in excellent condition. The challenge of the course includes (1) Tall grass on the edge of the fairways. (2) The greens were fast and you really had to know the breaks - lucky for me I played with someone with course knowledge otherwise I could see approach shots rolling off the green if you didn't know the slope. The other unique thing - there are no bunkers. They clearly used to be bunkers but they are all filling in with grass. Also, water is really not an issue on this course. There is some water but I would not say it is in play for most golfers (playing the forward tees). There is a creek on the side of #1 and #10 but you really have to hit your driver really off line for it to be an impact (you are more likely to lose your ball in the tall grass). It's a fun course and I recommend you play it if you are in the area.
