Oakhurst Country Club

Clayton, California, USAEast Bay

Oakhurst Country Club combines challenging shots with breathtaking views of Mount Diablo, creating a rewarding golf experience in California's East Bay. Recently refreshed bunkers and consistently fast greens elevate the competitive spirit of this private 18-hole course.

Course Overview

Oakhurst Country Club in Clayton, California offers an experience that quietly challenges and rewards every golfer who steps onto its fairways. With sweeping views of Mount Diablo casting a watchful presence over the course, this layout winds through gentle hills and rugged valleys, inviting players to engage every shot with strategy and precision. Designed originally with classic country club values in mind, this 18-hole course blends demanding turf with the natural contours of the land, making each hole feel like both a measured puzzle and an open canvas for creativity.

Since its inception, Oakhurst has carried a reputation for prioritizing a pure golf experience above all else. The driving range and practice facilities sharpen your game under clear California skies, while the course itself tests your shot-making and course management. Fairways run generous yet firm, encouraging thoughtful placement, while the rough waits patiently to test your recovery shots. Greens here reward careful reading with their consistent pace and subtly contoured surfaces, reflecting recent bunkering updates designed to restore the course’s original challenge and character.

Playing at Oakhurst means listening to the wind as it shifts through stands of oak and pine, feeling the firm California sun, and watching clouds drift lazily above peaks in the distance. The course’s topography gives each hole a distinct personality: some demand towering iron shots over ridges, while others coax a delicate touch around greens lined by bunkers currently undergoing renovation. These bunkers, once softened by time, are now being sharpened back to their original edges to bring back the bite and visual definition sorely missed in past years.

Not just a game of shots but one of patience, Oakhurst rewards golfers who pay attention to the changing light and shadows across its rolling landscape. Its location outside the bustle of urban life allows for a quiet competitive round where the only sounds are the thwack of a well-struck ball and birds calling from the tree lines. It’s especially rewarding for those who appreciate a course that has evolved while respecting its history - a gem that’s steadily being polished, with recent memberships reflecting renewed enthusiasm for the club’s future.

Practical planning advice for visitors: the course maintains a strong walking culture encouraged by both members and staff, with well-maintained paths and gentle slopes that make each step pleasant. Good walking shoes are recommended, especially for the varied terrain around the practice range and back nine hills. Playing in spring or fall offers the best combination of mild weather and vibrant natural colors, while summer rounds come alive with bright sunshine and dynamic views of the Diablo peaks.

Facilities around the clubhouse provide comfortable spaces to unwind before and after your round, including a well-appointed bar and dining area where players share stories and strategies. While the club is private, guest play by invitation provides a rare chance to test a course known for its solid conditioning and competitive spirit. Whether you’re working on your short game or embracing the challenge of long, visually demanding par 5s, Oakhurst Country Club delivers a golfing adventure that balances natural beauty with serious playability. As the renovations progress, expect this course to draw more attention as a top destination in the East Bay region where classic country club golf blends effortlessly with the rugged character of Northern California’s landscape.

Course Highlights

The course boasts dramatic views of Mount Diablo and rolling hill landscapes that create a natural strategic challenge. Signature holes include a long par-5 that climbs toward scenic ridgelines and a tight par-4 where placement off the tee is critical to avoid newly restored bunkers. Oakhurst’s bunkers are currently being reshaped to restore their original firmness and visual appeal. The consistent green speeds and practice facility quality highlight the club’s commitment to serious golf.

Went here for a school function. Soft skill training. The place was nice and has good views. There was a bar there also but didn’t have a chance to check it out. Also there is downstairs too. We were on the main entrance floor. Very fancy .

This is purely a golf course and related facilities review. Being a private course I was expecting the condition to reflect that. The staff in the pro-shop were nice. The driving range and practices areas are pretty good, and the course itself is challenging. There are some nice views and scenery as the course moves through the hills but it certainly needs some work. They’re focused on updating the bunkers at the moment, which is a much needed change. The fairways and rough are like any average municipal but the greens take it up a notch. Fair speed, consistent throughout the course and in good condition. I have a friend that’s a member so I’ve played a few times on a weekday afternoon for $60. Given the course condition I’m not sure the price is justified. However, every time I’ve played we’ve been one of very few people out there, so the pace of play is as good as you could hope for. Overall, I think they’re doing a lot of good work to bring the course back to life, so we’ll see how it shapes up over time. If they get it back to true country club condition, this could be a gem.

What a great golf course. This was my first time playing at Oakhurst. Everything from the clubhouse to the green on the 18th where great! And the views on the course are breathtaking. I can’t wait to go back and play again.
