Bear Trap Dunes

Ocean View, Delaware, USADelmarva Coast

Located along Delaware’s coast, Bear Trap Dunes features 27 holes spread over three distinct nine-hole courses that combine parkland and coastal styles. Windswept fairways, strategic bunkers, and natural marshlands provide a challenging yet approachable layout suitable for a range of skill levels.

Course Overview

Bear Trap Dunes offers a compelling challenge and a diverse golf experience across its 27 holes, divided into three distinct nine-hole courses: Black Bear, Kodiak, and Grizzly. Situated along Delaware’s eastern coast, this semi-private facility presents a blend of parkland and coastal layouts, with holes threading through maritime forests, expansive dunes, and salt marsh vistas. The landscape interacts directly with the game, as persistent breezes test player strategy and shots, especially on open holes where the wind shapes club selection and shot trajectory.

The thoughtful course design balances challenge and approachability, making Bear Trap Dunes an engaging destination for a broad range of golfers. Fairways are generously contoured, forgiving enough to accommodate mid and high handicappers, while the undulating greens reward precise putting and creative shot-making. Sand bunkers and natural wetlands serve as strategic hazards, adding layers of complexity that demand respect but avoid frustration.

Players can expect immaculate conditioning throughout the year, with lush fairways and smooth greens that reflect the club’s commitment to maintenance excellence. The course’s layout encourages walking, with ample cart paths and gentle elevation changes that allow players to enjoy the natural surroundings without excessive exertion.

The clubhouse at 7 Club House Drive anchors the facility, providing a welcoming space for members and guests to relax before or after rounds. Amenities include a well-stocked pro shop, practice areas, and dining options that blend casual comfort with refined service. While carts are available, walking is encouraged to fully engage with the environment and course nuances.

Bear Trap Dunes’ coastal location means players should prepare for variable weather and winds that can shift quickly, particularly in spring and fall. Water stations and restroom facilities are available on course but not abundantly spaced, so it’s advisable to plan accordingly.

Overall, Bear Trap Dunes stands out as a well-rounded venue offering scenic diversity, strategic golf, and an inviting atmosphere. Its combination of approachable holes, maintained conditions, and a landscape shaped by coastal forces delivers an experience worth exploring for golfers seeking both challenge and enjoyment near Delaware’s shore.

Course Highlights

Comprising Black Bear, Kodiak, and Grizzly nines, the course integrates coastal dunes and wetlands with parkland fairways. Persistent coastal winds influence play, particularly on exposed holes, while well-positioned bunkers and marsh areas add strategic depth without overwhelming players. Absolutely disgusted. I paid $148 for a mediocre course at best. First off, the help was not nice at all. Second, the course does not provide any water stations, or bathrooms, besides after the turn. Third, for what I paid, I play a course way better and help way nicer, for $65 at home with a cart. I will never be back. Never want to be back. Don’t waste your money here seriously. The only reason it is not a zero star is due to the greens being nice. The carts don’t even provide an electronic screen. You’re telling me this expensive public/private can’t afford better carts? i’m not buying that. Don’t come here.

I have played this golf course for past 10+ years and I have always been impressed with the staff. The staff is always friendly, accommodating, and makes me feel like I am at my home away from home. This is from the Pro shop staff to the outside staff to upper management. The golf courses are great and are always in pristine condition. Challenging layouts but all 9s provide plenty of birdie opportunities. I shot my career low on Black Bear/Kodiak 30-33 63 -9 last July there with my grandad. Score aside, this has always been a place that I look forward to going each and every year my family and I visit Dewey Beach.

We love staying at Bear Trap Dunes for our Bethany Beach vacations. A quick drive from the beach, BTD offers a lot of activities for kids, including tennis and pickleball lessons, multiple pools, and playgrounds. It's a very peaceful and friendly community.

Traveling through town on business and was able to book a tee time as a single. From the pro shop to the starter, everyone was professional, polite, and extremely helpful. They treated me as if I was a paying member and answered my questions about the course like they knew me by name. Thanks for a great experience. I’ll definitely be back!

Solid golf course - Black Bear and Grizzly. Good staff. Not too excited about hitting off mats on the driving range during prime season though. Have to go down to Lighthouse Sound it seems to enjoy a grass tee experience.
