Red Wing Lake Golf Course

Virginia Beach, Virginia, USACoastal Virginia

Red Wing Lake Golf Course provides a relaxed parkland experience close to Virginia Beach’s oceanfront. Its approachable 18-hole layout, blending gentle fairways with natural water features, suits beginners and intermediate golfers looking for a straightforward, welcoming round near the coast.

Course Overview

Red Wing Lake Golf Course offers an approachable yet engaging layout that caters primarily to beginner and intermediate golfers seeking a relaxed round just minutes from the Virginia Beach oceanfront. This public 18-hole course wraps around a serene lake, presenting a straightforward parkland style defined by wide fairways lined with pines and scattered water hazards that test course management without overwhelming new players. The gently rolling terrain and open sightlines create a setting that feels spacious and welcoming, setting a comfortable pace for players looking to hone their skills or enjoy a casual day on the links.

Fairways here tend to be forgiving, making it easier to recover from less-than-perfect shots. However, course conditions can vary, with some reviews noting firm and dry ground and a few inconsistencies in green speed and smoothness. Despite these challenges, the course rewards strategic choices and placement over sheer distance, particularly around the signature holes where water comes into play. The lake itself, while not aggressive across every hole, adds a natural boundary that demands a careful tee shot and precise approach.

Red Wing Lake’s staff is recognized for friendly service, enhancing the overall experience with a welcoming atmosphere. Practical amenities include a modest clubhouse offering basic refreshments and easy access from Virginia Beach's main thoroughfares, making it a convenient stop for travelers or local players. Walking the course is common, with generally firm footing and little elevation change, allowing golfers to focus on shot-making rather than physical strain.

For visitors planning a trip, early morning tee times often present the best course conditions before midday sun intensifies the firm turf. Those drawn by a less intimidating but still thoughtfully designed course layout will find Red Wing Lake a fitting option, especially when combined with the nearby sights and sounds unique to coastal Virginia. Keep in mind that 18-hole rounds are standard pricing regardless of playing nine, so plan your schedule accordingly to get the full experience here.

Red Wing Lake may not boast the pristine conditioning of top-tier resorts, but its ease of play and natural environment make it a practical choice for golfers building confidence or seeking an unpretentious round near the Atlantic coastline.

Course Highlights

The course features a traditional parkland layout with a sizeable lake influencing play on several holes. Wide fairways lined by tall pines create a forgiving setting while natural water hazards provide strategic challenges. The course’s proximity to the coast offers occasional glimpses of local wildlife, including deer sightings and frequent bird activity, complementing a peaceful round.

Great course, the greens were a little slow but in good shape. I always have a great experience when I play here. Didn't see the Bald Eagles this time but a deer ran in front of us. Neat!

Great beginner/intermediate track 10 minutes from Virginia Beach oceanfront resorts. Reasonably priced and great staff. Bonus is having Super Hornets do flyovers every 15 minutes so you get a free air show with your green fee!

Had a great time here. The fairways are friendly and the course is looking good.

This course is maybe worth $25. There is no rough. Just pine cones and pine straw nothing is raked. Greens are bumpy and don't roll true. I'd avoid paying $50 here and playing any other course. Also, they force you to pay for 18 even if you want to only play 9.

Redwing golf course is in terrible shape. Ground is hard and dry. Fairways are cut way to short. The rough is high. Tee boxes are hard and bare. Greens are not cut or rolled. They were slow. Some greens were even burnt. What makes it even worse they want to charge 50 bucks for this. A oceanfront course and they want to rob people. Never again.
