Red Wing Lake Golf Course

Virginia Beach, Virginia, USACoastal Virginia

Red Wing Lake Golf Course offers a friendly 18-hole public layout near Virginia Beach’s oceanfront, blending open fairways and pine-lined corridors with coastal breezes. Perfect for beginner and intermediate golfers, it balances approachable play with a distinctive local atmosphere.

Course Overview

Red Wing Lake Golf Course presents a welcoming layout ideal for beginner and intermediate golfers looking to sharpen their skills near the Virginia Beach oceanfront. This 18-hole public course offers a broad, open design with generous fairways lined by towering pines, creating a natural boundary that frames each hole without feeling constricting. Golfers find a mostly flat terrain, which makes walking the course accessible and less physically demanding compared to hillier venues in the region.

The course's defining character comes from its straightforward playability and the ambiance shaped by its coastal proximity. Though not a traditional links or resort course, the presence of maritime breezes adds a subtle variable that can influence shot selection and tempo, keeping players attentive and engaged. The greens vary in size but generally lean toward a modest roll, providing a fair challenge without overwhelming less experienced putters. While some areas, including rough and tee boxes, may show signs of wear, the overall layout supports an enjoyable round focused on fundamental shot-making.

Red Wing Lake's location just minutes from Virginia Beach’s bustling oceanfront resorts makes it an attractive choice for visitors seeking golf without extended travel. Alongside the golf experience, players often mention the occasional overhead flyby of Navy Super Hornets, adding an unexpected burst of excitement unique to this venue.

For players planning a visit, walking is encouraged and well-supported by flat walkways and ample shade from mature trees; comfortable golf shoes with good traction will enhance enjoyment, especially during warmer months when the dry ground can be firm. The course’s design suits those developing their game as well as casual players eager for a relaxed day outdoors.

Facilities focus on core golf amenities, presenting a no-frills environment where the pace of play generally moves smoothly. Red Wing Lake balances affordability with accessibility, offering a practical alternative to pricier coastal courses. Whether fitting in a quick round or spending a day honing skills, it remains a reliable option for approachable golf in the Virginia Beach area.

Great course, the greens were a little slow but in good shape. I always have a great experience when I play here. Didn't see the Bald Eagles this time but a deer ran in front of us. Neat!

Great beginner/intermediate track 10 minutes from Virginia Beach oceanfront resorts. Reasonably priced and great staff. Bonus is having Super Hornets do flyovers every 15 minutes so you get a free air show with your green fee!

This course is maybe worth $25. There is no rough. Just pine cones and pine straw nothing is raked. Greens are bumpy and don't roll true. I'd avoid paying $50 here and playing any other course. Also, they force you to pay for 18 even if you want to only play 9.

Redwing golf course is in terrible shape. Ground is hard and dry. Fairways are cut way to short. The rough is high. Tee boxes are hard and bare. Greens are not cut or rolled. They were slow. Some greens were even burnt. What makes it even worse they want to charge 50 bucks for this. A oceanfront course and they want to rob people. Never again.
