Kempsville Greens Golf Club

Virginia Beach, Virginia, USACoastal Virginia

Kempsville Greens Golf Club offers a compact, 18-hole parkland layout focused on precision and strategic play. Its tight fairways and natural setting present approachable yet thoughtful challenges, making it ideal for mid-handicap players and those seeking an affordable round near Virginia Beach.

Course Overview

Kempsville Greens Golf Club in Virginia Beach offers an accessible and compact layout tailored primarily for golfers seeking a quick yet engaging round. This 18-hole, public facility stretches just over 5,700 yards with a par of 71, presenting a course that favors precision over power. Its design emphasizes tight fairways bordered by natural vegetation and mature trees, demanding controlled shot-making and strategic navigation rather than brute force.

The course's parkland style contrasts with the region’s more expansive links or resort-style layouts by keeping everything within close reach, from tee to green. Each hole presents a series of subtle challenges, like narrow landing areas and limited recovery options, ensuring players of all skill levels remain attentive to course management. While it may not test the longest hitters, Kempsville Greens rewards accuracy and sound short game fundamentals.

Set within an established part of Virginia Beach, the surroundings provide a quiet, wooded backdrop—typical of many inland Southeastern courses. The undulating terrain adds depth to the playing surface without overwhelming the golfer with severe elevation changes. One standout is the par-4 ninth hole, where a well-placed tee shot opens the approach to a green guarded by deep bunkers and natural rough, providing a memorable test amid the modest yardage.

The facility supports comfortable play with GPS-equipped carts and a friendly staff ensuring smooth pace of play, although peak times may feel busier due to the compact routing. Amenities include a snack bar offering refreshment options and a practice area suitable for warming up or honing short swings. Walking the course is encouraged, though golfers should prepare for tight fairways and uneven ground by wearing supportive footwear.

Kempsville Greens suits beginners looking to develop accuracy and mid-handicap players seeking consistency-focused challenges. While not a championship-caliber course, it offers a practical, affordable round close to Virginia Beach’s urban center. This course may appeal most to those prioritizing pace and precision over length and luxury, providing a straightforward but thoughtful golf experience.

Course Highlights

Kempsville Greens features tight, tree-lined fairways that demand accuracy, with a modest overall yardage that emphasizes shot placement over distance. The par-4 ninth hole stands out with its protective bunkers and challenging green approach. GPS-equipped carts and a welcoming staff contribute to a convenient play experience despite occasional pace-of-play issues.

Easily one of the worst ran courses I’ve been to. The fairways are like roughs, the greens have more weed than snoop dog, and you have to wait 30 mins at each tee box to tee off because they don’t control pace of play. Honestly dumb ass management to allow that.

07/01/25 Has a range that you only are going to use shirt irons on. Very tight course so probably not going to bomb drives without hitting a few structures. Worth playing once

The golf carts with a course display were the nicest thing about this place. The staff was friendly and helpful, but the course itself is in terrible shape all across the board. The tee times were way too close together and made the course play incredibly slow, we got through 3 holes in 50min.

Charge the same price as nice courses, like Herons Ridge, but has bow creek quality. Absolute rip off.

The front nine greens are faster than the back nine. Ground is hard, rain will soften it up. I really enjoyed playing there.

This course is in terrible shape. Tee boxes are horrible. The fairways are bare and hard. There's no sand in the bunkers. The greens are extremely hard and bumpy. I think for the money there asking for is a rip off.
