Hunter Golf Course

Savannah, Georgia, USACoastal Georgia

Hunter Golf Course provides an 18-hole challenge within a military base setting in Savannah, Georgia. Offering affordable play and a straightforward layout, this course tests accuracy with firm turf and uneven greens, delivering a unique golfing experience on active military grounds.

Course Overview

Hunter Golf Course offers a distinctive golfing experience set within an active military installation in Savannah, Georgia. This 18-hole layout stretches over a challenging and uneven terrain that reflects its unique context as a base facility. While the course’s maintenance reflects certain constraints typical of military operations, the design presents a genuine test of accuracy and patience for players at all skill levels. Characterized by wide fairways interspersed with rough patches and sparse grass in areas, golfers will find demands on shot placement crucial, especially with greens that carry uneven surfaces and subtle breaks.

The course’s setting is unlike traditional civilian venues, framed by a blend of open grounds and military infrastructure, lending a distinct atmosphere. The flat profile welcomes walking, though players should be prepared for firm lies and occasional bare patches on tee boxes. Bunkers are functional rather than decorative, guarding the greens with moderate challenge rather than elaborate traps. Those seeking pristine conditions might adjust their expectations, but for the cost-conscious player or those interested in a military golf outing, Hunter provides an affordable and straightforward round.

Amenities include a modest practice facility and a welcoming clubhouse environment with friendly staff who emphasize hospitality despite some limitations inherent to a working base. Access requires prior security clearance, so planning ahead is essential. Walkers will appreciate the relatively flat layout but should bring supportive footwear due to uneven footing in several areas. Playing in drier seasons will improve conditions, as drainage issues can arise following heavy rains.

Hunter Golf Course offers a no-frills, practical round with a focus on accessible pricing and the chance to experience golf on military grounds. Its simplicity makes it suitable for golfers who value straightforward championship-length play over manicured aesthetics, complemented by attentive service and a welcoming attitude toward soldiers, families, and guests alike.

Course Highlights

Hunter Golf Course stands out as a military base layout where straightforward design and functional bunkers emphasize shot accuracy over scenic variety. The course’s firm, sometimes patchy turf challenges approach shots and putting speed judgment. While it lacks traditional landscaping polish, it offers a rare chance to play a public-access course on military property with friendly staff and practical facilities.

Quite an interesting experience. The good, nice staff and tasty hotdogs. That’s it. It’s a goat farm. Greens are diseased and baron. Fairways are rock hard, not watered, full of weeds and with little grass. Tee boxes are basically sand traps. They don’t rape you in price but the best hole in the course is the driving range.

On base, need security pass to gain access -so plan ahead by a few days & use online pass system to prepare access pass; priced right! Longer holes than anticipated… but forgiving on some holes to drive your spun 😵‍💫 spread pattern… but the greens are center target 🎯 only or they punish all ⛳️ transgressions! 🏌️‍♂️#militarygolfadventure

A nice place to spend an afternoon, however the course is in rough shape and the greens are a bit of a disaster. Lots of rough (if you're a hacker like me bring lots of balls!). Very reasonable price and again a nice place to spend a few hours.

The course was actually pretty nice it just rained, and the course was unplayable. Layout and greens were good. Just when it rains, there is no drainage, but it's Savannah and makes perfect sense. I'll be back to play on a dry day.

It is located within the military base. You must go to the visitor control center with your ID to get an access card. We didn't play golf and lost our reservation fee. It's better for business travelers not to try it even if it's cheap.

Played course 28 Feb 2024. The lady in the pro shop was very nice and informational. She made me feel welcomed. Only cost 13 bucks to walk 9. The practice facilities are about average or slightly above. As for the course, remember it is a military course so my expectations was not extremely high. The tee boxes need a lot of work and some barely have any grass. As for the fairways there are a few rough patches, holes, and dry spots with little grass. I saw no issues with the bunkers but the greens are bumpy in most areas of the greens with little weeds showing. I hope the base pours more money into this course and actually invest into it. I could see myself coming back to this course if I am ever in the area again.
