Wilmington Municipal Golf Course
Wilmington Municipal Golf Course delivers an accessible public round within Donald Ross’s parkland style, blending strategic bunkering and challenging greens across 18 well-maintained holes. Ideal for golfers seeking a test that rewards precision and course management without premium cost.
Course Overview
Wilmington Municipal Golf Course offers an authentic public golfing experience steeped in Donald Ross’s design philosophy, located just minutes from downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. This 18-hole layout stretches over 6,427 yards with a par of 72, presenting a classic parkland framework that blends fairways lined by towering pines and strategically placed bunkers. The course’s terrain is gently rolling, revealing Ross’s signature complexity around the greens, where well-guarded putting surfaces demand thoughtful approach shots and precise short game execution.
From the moment golfers set foot on the first tee, the course encourages a balanced challenge suitable for a broad spectrum of skill levels. While approachable for amateurs, the intricate green complexes and tree-lined corridors provide a rigorous test for more seasoned players aiming to master course management. The standout feature is the third hole, a daunting par-3 that features a contoured green with fallaways on every side, requiring both nerve and accuracy to hold the putting surface.
Maintenance on Wilmington Municipal remains commendable, with fairways and greens generally kept in solid condition, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve the course despite municipal budget constraints. Bunkers are clean and well-positioned, demanding strategic shot placement rather than brute power. Although occasional repairs and sod work touch parts of the course, they seldom interrupt play or detract from the overall experience.
The facility embraces a relaxed public atmosphere, making it a competitive value for golfers seeking a course with Donald Ross heritage without the premium price. Players should anticipate some challenges related to pace of play, especially during peak hours, so early tee times or late-afternoon rounds are recommended to maintain a steady rhythm.
Amenities include a driving range and putting greens that mirror the quality found on the course itself, ideal for pre-round warm-ups or honing short games. Cart rentals are available for those looking to conserve energy, though walking is feasible given the course's gentle topography. Wilmington Municipal remains one of the region’s best options for public golf, combining historical design with accessible playability within a scenic North Carolina setting.

Busy course, but in great shape. Affordable Donald Ross public course. Book a tee time a week in advance. Al was super friendly and helpful.

This was a really fun experience on a Donald Ross original! for the price point. it's really hard to beat and complain so with that said, I probably had higher than realistic expectations. from what I had been told while it did somewhat disappoint, I had to be realistic and come to the conclusion. it was still a municipal golf course at the end of the day and probably one of the better available! it does however not hold a candle to the Charleston Muni after playing them both back-to-back weeks. I can tell you the Charleston Muni is far and beyond the better of the two courses and it's not even close. That's not taking anything away from the Wilmington municipal. they just obviously don't have the monetary funds that have gone into the Charleston Muni the last few years. I'm glad I checked it off my list but I'm not sure I would play it again. that being said, if you are visiting Wilmington and need a public golf course for the Price I'm sure it's difficult if not impossible to beat. really nice track. by far my favorite hole was number three a very daunting par 3. extremely difficult to hold with a fall off on every side! would love to drop some balls and play this one again

A challenging layout around the greens, but the conditions are very good, pace of play was 4:10, and it was a bargain for the prices they charge.

Really, my only complaint is that we didn't tee off until a good 30 minutes after our scheduled tee time.. we were told there were a few groups ahead of us for some reason. Pace/scheduling management issues aside, the course is great for a municipal. Greens were well maintained, fairways were decent, bunkers were clean. Medium difficulty, good number of hazards. We enjoyed it a lot!

This is an amazing course. You can clearly see the Ross touches in the bunkering and green complexes. Think about it - $45 (includes cart) for a classic Ross design. Conditions: the tee boxes were fine, along with the fairways, greens and bunkers. The greens were actually sneaky fast and putted true. There is currently some ground under repair because they laid down some sod, but l didn’t feel like it came into play too much. And it’s nice to see they are making needed improvements. I definitely will return, and l can definitely recommend this course. Side notes: l didn’t use the driving range and the putting green was equal to the courses greens. The carts were ok, and they didn’t have GPS or a rain cover for the bags.

Great course, but the pace of play is horrible. I've learned that you either need to be in the first few groups or play later in the day ( after 4). Guys thinking they are PGA pro's looking for balls instead of sucking it up and moving along. There are these regulars who also suck up the good tee-times because they know the staff. As long as you're realistic, you'll be ok but expect a 5hr round for 18!
