Forest Hills Golf Course

La Crosse, Wisconsin, USACentral Wisconsin

Forest Hills Golf Course in La Crosse offers an 18-hole public layout where history meets challenge. Its rolling terrain, strategic bunkering, and well-maintained greens create an engaging journey for golfers of all levels in a picturesque Wisconsin setting.

Course Overview

Forest Hills Golf Course, located at 600 Losey Blvd N in La Crosse, Wisconsin, presents a unique golfing experience blending history with challenge. This 18-hole public course offers a compact layout where strategic play is rewarded, thanks in part to its mix of old and redesigned holes. Once a private club dating back to 1900, Forest Hills carries a legacy that echoes through its undulating fairways and natural elevation changes. The course demands attention with uphill shots and well-placed hazards that shape each hole’s distinct character.

Set against a backdrop of rolling hills and mature trees, the course’s greens and fairways are maintained to a high standard, producing rich, vibrant turf even after periods of heavy rain. Golfers comment frequently on the course’s walkability and the challenge posed by subtle elevation shifts. The interplay of tight landing areas and thoughtfully positioned bunkers rewards accuracy over power. Adding to the experience is a historic railroad track that runs through the property, although safety rules prevent hitting directly across it, influencing how the holes play and lending a flavor of local heritage.

Forest Hills welcomes players of varying skill levels. While shorter yardages might suggest an easier round, the course’s sloping terrain and strategically placed obstacles elevate the challenge for low handicappers without overwhelming beginners. The practice facilities, including dedicated chipping and putting areas, allow golfers to fine-tune their short game before teeing off. Friendly and attentive staff add to the overall experience, ensuring pace of play is maintained without feeling rushed.

After the round, players can relax at the course’s well-regarded 19th hole, a perfect spot to reflect on the day’s golf amid views of the course’s rolling landscape. Located in Central Wisconsin, Forest Hills is a rewarding destination for those seeking a course with character, quality conditions, and a thoughtful blend of history and modern playability.

Beautiful track!! A little wet with all the rain but not bad. Everything is so vibrant and green, and a delight to walk. Staff was super nice too. Great course!

This course has an interesting history. It was built in 1900 and private. It has a train track running right through it. It was sold to the city of Lacrosse and the railroad said no more hitting across the tracks, so holes were shorten and it lost a lot of character. So its a mix of old and new holes. While short it plays longer and tougher with the uphill shots on various holes. The condition was good. It was very busy and there were too many carts. Does anyone ever walk?

Used the driving range. Other than the walk to get to it - it was very nice.

One of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in the Midwest. Service was amazing and Marc the starter/marshall was very informative and entertaining! Appreciated he was out on the course periodically to make sure pace of play was maintained. The 19th hole was a nice addition and a fun way to end your round. Definitely would go back.

Forest Hills is one of the best courses in the area. The prices are maybe on the higher side, but they are justified. I love the look of every hole. The staff are friendly. And I highly appreciate their practice range - including the chipping and putting greens. Plus, they have a 19th hole.
