Greene Hills Country Club

Stanardsville, Virginia, USACentral Virginia

Greene Hills Country Club is an 18-hole private course located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Known for its narrow fairways, small greens, and elevation changes, the layout offers a precise and strategic golf experience framed by mountain views and a welcoming, quiet environment.

Course Overview

Greene Hills Country Club offers a distinctive private golfing experience set within the gently rolling foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. This 18-hole course presents a compelling mixture of natural terrain and thoughtful design, rewarding players who prioritize accuracy and strategic play over sheer distance. While modest in length, the layout challenges with narrow fairways that rise and fall along undulating ground, demanding well-placed tee shots and an attentive approach to the small, carefully maintained greens. The course’s elevation changes create shifting angles and visual intrigue on every hole, with intermittent views of the distant mountain peaks framing several vantage points.

The overall environment blends rural tranquility with subtle sophistication. Mature trees line many holes, while natural grasses and native foliage border the fairways, giving moments of peaceful refuge. Though the course is relatively compact, the interplay between slope and obstacles encourages thoughtful shot selection, making it accessible to a wide range of players while still offering a satisfying test for low handicaps.

Greene Hills extends beyond golf, featuring a modest pro shop and a clubhouse that offers straightforward dining options. The staff has received praise for friendly service, particularly during quieter times, and the relaxed setting complements the course’s countryside character. Walking the course is supported and recommended, allowing players to fully absorb the varied terrain and spring-fed creeks that wind through the property. Golfers planning a visit should prepare for moderate elevation changes and bring footwear suited to hills and occasional uneven footing.

Located north of Charlottesville and within easy reach of Shenandoah National Park, Greene Hills stands out as a less-publicized gem for those seeking an intimate course that rewards precision and patience. Its combination of mountain vistas, well-manicured playing surfaces, and a quiet atmosphere balance the challenge of the layout with an inviting environment to enjoy a round. For members and invited guests, Greene Hills embodies a solid golf retreat that combines tradition with scenic charm and a friendly local vibe.

Course Highlights

Greene Hills features a course design that emphasizes accuracy on narrow, hilly fairways and small greens. Several holes offer panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, integrating natural elevation shifts that demand strategic club selection. The peaceful surroundings and well-tended playing surfaces make it popular among players who enjoy a technical, thoughtful round rather than brute length.

The course was in good shape. Nice views. However the staff was very rude. They had a tournament going on and ALL their focus was on that. It started when calling to set up a tee time. I was instructed to “call back later because they were too busy setting up tee time for members”. Then once we arrived, pace of our play was their biggest concern. Even though that had two members teeing off in our time slot. I understand that members get special treatment but plan better or don’t open it to the public on tournament days. The staff at the pro shop made us feel like second class citizens

Greene Hills is an amazing private club north of Charlottesville out in the country not far from Shenandoah National Park. The course was in great condition for being the offseason and was a lot of fun to play and had amazing views of the surrounding mountains. The course is on the shorter side but features small greens, and relatively hilly narrow fairways making accuracy a premium. The staff and few golfers braving the elements were pleasant and welcoming which made for an enjoyable experience. This is a course I consider to be relatively unknown in the Charlottesville area but is one of the better layouts and is worth playing if you are able to.

Got a pass for the weekend to play tennis. The views were the best I've ever seen, and the great weather to boot. They have a pro shop with limited selections, and a club house that serves the basics for food and drinks. Everyone working there was pleasant and helpful.

Great coarse located in the foothills of the blue ridge mountains. Nice views of the mountains on several holes. Fairways and greens are in great shape. Challenging but not punishing layout. The staff in the pro shop and the grill are friendly and helpful.
