This semi-private course blends classic parkland characteristics with subtle mountain influences, evident in its gentle elevation changes and sweeping views that shift with each hole. The layout balances strategy and accessibility, making it welcoming for golfers of varying skill levels while rewarding precision and thoughtful shot placement.

Fairways at Mattaponi Springs are generally generous but guarded by well-positioned bunkers that demand accuracy, particularly on approach shots. The greens are consistently maintained and receptive, encouraging a variety of short-game options. Several holes feature slopes that shape pin positions differently from day to day, providing fresh challenges and preventing the course from feeling predictable. Elevation shifts give many holes a distinctive character without overwhelming the player, adding both visual appeal and shot-making interest.

The course’s setting is defined by dense stands of pine and hardwood trees that frame the fairways, creating a sense of quiet seclusion. Natural wildlife can be seen throughout the round, enhancing the experience with glimpses of local fauna. Maintenance standards have been praised by many visitors, particularly the condition of greens, fairways, and bunkers, all of which receive constant attention. The layout flows well and rewards a well-rounded game, blending risk and reward thoughtfully.

Additional amenities include a fully stocked pro shop, a driving range with ample practice areas, and a recently updated clubhouse that offers comfortable dining and a welcoming atmosphere. The recent addition of high-tech golf simulators extends play options year-round, complementing the outdoor experience. Sadly the once great Mattaponi Springs isn't what it used to be, but the prices haven't changed. The only exception is the staff, who are top shelf. Tee to green is patchy with bare spots everywhere. Multiple greens had water pooling. Fringes and rough have been let go. Bunkers mostly need to be played rake and place. The once picturesque 17 par three smells like sewage. Food is overpriced and slow to receive. That isn't the fault of the staff it's a management issue clearing thinking higher prices and under staffing is good business. Just because you charge high green fees and $18 hamburgers doesn't mean you are a high end destination and this is the case here.

Always a favorite with my golf group. Fairways and greens are in excellent shape, and the cost is very reasonable. It is an interesting, challenging course.

I’ve been playing here off and on for a couple of years now, and Mattaponi Springs really does it right! Tonight my husband and I tried out their brand new golf simulator and it was amazing! Garry met us at the bar, carried my clubs in, and got us all set up. We were able to get food and drinks brought right over to us. It’s basically your own private room! There are tons of courses to choose from on the simulator - from Augusta to Sawgrass to our very own Mattaponi. My favorite feature was being able to see a short replay of my ball strike. There was so much valuable information included in this simulator! They’ve also recently moved their carts to a more convenient location for loading and unloading clubs, which was a welcomed surprise my first time back this spring. They also added coolers to the carts and will give you ice at the clubhouse when you purchase drinks! The course is in immaculate shape, and their care truly shows all year round. All of the food I’ve had here has been fresh, hot, and delicious! The staff here are so welcoming, helpful, and friendly! The course is secluded, peaceful, and full of wildlife. We absolutely love coming here and are so grateful that it’s close to home!

Just go! This is a fabulous course and well-maintained. Worth every penny. Here's a couple Pro tips, make sure and pick up your cart in the parking lot before going to the clubhouse. Bring lots of bug spray in case. And if you suffer from allergies, don't come near this place when the pollen starts coming down. This is a beautiful piece of property with a ton of Pine and other trees on it. The facilities were clean neat and well laid out. Service was impeccable and friendly. Carts are new and well-appointed. I found the tee boxes, greens, and yes, even fairways to be an excellent shape. Sand traps, which are usually the worst part of a course or in great shape and well-maintained. We played the course in early May. They have an excellent practice facility and free range balls.

As a golfer, I can honestly say Mattaponi Springs Golf Club is one of the best courses I’ve ever played. The layout is both challenging and fair, with dramatic elevation changes and stunning views on almost every hole. The fairways are lush and perfectly maintained, and the greens are fast, true, and a real pleasure to putt on. I love that the course feels secluded and peaceful, with no houses or traffic to distract from the game. The staff is always welcoming and professional, and the clubhouse has everything I need, from great food to a well-stocked pro shop. Every round I’ve played here has been memorable, and I always leave looking forward to my next visit. If you’re looking for a top-notch golf experience in Virginia, Mattaponi Springs is a must-play.

First time playing the course. Drove 2 hours and it did not disappoint. I wish the greens were a little faster and the carts probably need an upgrade but they're still getting a 5 star. Great layout, challenging, well maintained, friendly staff. Would definitely play it again!!
